A little OT: I need some $2 bills, where? *Updated*

I need to get about a hundred $2 bills. I've stopped into two different branches of my bank recently but they have none, nor can they help me find any.

I can't just keep driving around to different branches to see if by chance they have any. Any suggestions on how to find them [for face]?

  • is there a fed branch nearby? you might could get them there. What do you need them, anyway?

You should definitely "let your fingers do the walking" and call around, first. Since there has been only one issue of those since the Bicentennial era, the Series 1995, they might be tough to find in circulation. I had a small uncut sheet of those 1995's once. I can't even remember if they continued the Declaration of Independence reverse from the Series 1976, or resumed the old Monticello reverse. Shows how much I know about paper money. At least I've got a book on it, now.

I had a few, but any we get are immediately squirrelled away into my wife's jewelry box, for some reason...

PS- maybe you should put out a Wanted post on the BST and currency forums, if you haven't already?

I need them because I have to pay off a bet I lost. A guy in South Carolina and I have a running bet each year on the USC football games. Part of the fun is the "creative" payoff methods used. Last time I lost I bought him a really nice Clemson sweatshirt for the equivalent value of the money I owed him. He wouldn't be caught dead in Clemson anything, so he couldn't even enjoy it. image

I'm going to take the $2 bills over to OfficeMax's Copy Center, and have them gummed along one edge to form a small pad of bills. They'll still be legal tender, but he'll attract a lot of attention trying to spend them. I'll just tell him the restriction is that he cannot separate the bills from the pad before trying to spend them, and he can't just deposit them in the bank.

I'll try some phone calls to the larger branches and maybe I'll get lucky. I don't mind going out of my way if I know I won't be wasting the trip.

[edit] I don't want to ask on B/S/T, because I wouldn't expect anyone there to sell them to me for face value. [/edit]

Ask your bank you regularly do business with to order you a 100 note bundle for you.
If you get them, an added touch is to cut a heavy piece of cardboard for the back of the bundle of notes. You might also create a cover sheet on your computer. i.e. PRINTED ON SPECIAL ORDER FOR - Insert name.
We did that and it was lots of fun peeling off the notes to pay for things. My wife and I would take turns using the wad of bills with the one not paying watching the clerks face. Very amusing.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

  • I get mine at my bank. I have fazed out $1 bills entirely. I use $2 bills and dollar coins. They always have them because they know I'll always ask.

Kranky, did you see Bill Fivaz walking around with his "book" of $2 bills at ANA Summer Camp? I thought it was a hoot. Been meaning to do the same, just haven't gotten around to it yet. This should be the push I need to get me going. Thanks.

Well, calls to another couple of branches didn't pan out. So I called a friend who works in the commercial lending group at the bank and he promised me I can pick them up at his branch tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions (here in the thread and via PM).

danglen, I was at the Summer Seminar the first week, and you and Bill Fivaz must have been there the second week, so I didn't get to see that. Too bad, because Fivaz is a guy I've always wanted to meet.

calgolddiver, no, I'm not a Clemson grad. They guy I lost the bet to is a Gamec-ck fanatic, so he's very anti-Clemson. That's why I bought him the nice Clemson sweatshirt, since I knew he'd never wear it. Thanks for the offer to get some $2s, I'm hoping the bank will hook me up tomorrow.

  • Guys, I'm a South Carolinaian. Let me tell you a secret, I have never seen a rivaliry that produces such hatred as Gamec-cks-Tigers. NEVER. I'm a USC grad myself, old enough to remember the 1988 USC-Navy game. What heartbreak! Someday.

UPDATE: The bank came through with a nice brand-new pack of 100 $2 notes. I took Coulport's advice and made up a cover sheet on the PC that said "Printed especially for John Smith by the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing". Then I went to the OfficeMax copy center and asked the guy if he'd make them up into a pad with a cardboard back. He didn't even bat an eye.

Picked them up today, they charged 54 cents. That's quite a bargain.

I had some $2s left over from the pack and will be spending them. The cafeteria lady at work didn't even flinch. Tonight we went to a Chinese place for dinner and used a $2, and the cashier said matter-of-factly, "Oh, a two dollar bill. I don't get many of these."

I'm determined to find someone who reacts like this.

  • Kranky, that was the funniest thing I've read in a while. Far better than the time I tried to pay for a frosty at wendy's with 2 Sacs and the manager informed me they don't take Canadian money there.
