I won an auction recently and the seller sent me an e-mail which read, in part, "If paying by PayPal, please add 2.2% plus 30 cents to cover the fees that PayPal charges us."
Of course, this was not mentioned anywhere in the auction.
Has anyone else run into this cr*p? (It's a first for me). If you've seen this, how did you respond? I have no negs. and don't want any but geeez...

I do not fault sellers who do this, but your seller should have mentioned it up front in their auction. On some items, I do not mind paying the seller's fees in return for the convenience of using PayPal to purchase the item. I personally would never do this as a seller, though, since I prefer my bidders use PayPal, and I would want to encourage them rather than discourage them. I have even offered a discounted (or even free) shipping rate for PayPal users in the past. It beats waiting for checks to come in the mail, clear the bank, etc. People who do this may recoup the PayPal fees, but they discourage bidders from using PayPal by doing so. I suppose it is a matter of preference for the seller. And the bidder. It might have ticked you off, but it doesn't bother me much.
Some foreign sellers also have to pay additional exchange fees to convert the dollars to their currency, I believe. These folks are justified in asking the bidder to share some of that cost.
eBay policy states: "Sellers may not charge eBay buyers an additional
fee for their use of ordinary forms of payment, including acceptance of
checks, money orders, electronic transfers or credit cards. Such costs
should be built into the price of the item -- this policy reduces the
potential for confusion among bidders about the true cost of an item.
Further, some forms of payment surcharges, such as credit card
surcharges, are forbidden under the laws of many states, including
California." Thus, it would be illegal for a seller to charge a buyer
additional fees for payments made through PayPal.

Since it has become so widespread, and is now owned by eBay, I suppose so...
That's so... uh... 1980's. Like when I had no computer and used the classified section of Numismatic News for buying and selling. Primitive.
(Or like having to go back to using a dialup modem after using DSL- this horrifying occurrence actually happened to me a month or two ago. What an ordeal! Thank goodness I'm back on DSL, and we have even this ancient Gateway adapted for it, now...)
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I didn't know it; maybe this seller didn't either. I've seen this done occassionally. I've never done it, but have thought about it. Paypal fees do add up! Now that I know, I'll not try it. A gentle email to the seller about Ebay's rules is justified.
The reason I say he knows it, is because of the fact it was embedded in an email after the auction and not part of the description. A naive person would have listed it in the text.

These fees really add up to a seller, many no longer accept this form of payment for this reason.
If they stated they accept PayPal in the auction description, then I think they need to accept it. They should just change their account to a personal account, and only accept transfer payments. (that is what I have)
i would tell the seller that if you knew that you had to pay the paypal fees when you bid, you would have bid 2.2% plus 30 cents less than you did.
don't fear negative feedback. a neg hurts a seller much more than a buyer. i had a seller try and gouge me for a ridiculous amount of shipping and handling when his listing did not mention it. he was a nasty old coot and said if i didn't want to pay $7 to ship (an item that should have been shipped for less than $1) then we can go right to swapping negative feedback.
i told him let's go. i reminded him how badly i could destroy his account and how stupid i am when it comes to revenge.
he shipped it at cost.

<< <i>If you pay by PayPal using a Bank Account, the seller is charged the same as if you used a Credit Card. If you have a business account, they take the money regardless of the way you pay. >>
I was un aware of that, I to only have a personal account.
Regardless I stand behind my last post. It is the cost of accepting Paypal and believe it or not accepting Paypal (credit cards) does promote higher bids and selling prices that more than cover the fees in the long run. This guy wants it all, to heck with him.

PS- it wasn't noted, but it was too small an amount for me to really care.
Go to Ebay Help Section, and see if that's true, then email the seller about this.
