ebay seller wants me to pay for PayPal!?!

I won an auction recently and the seller sent me an e-mail which read, in part, "If paying by PayPal, please add 2.2% plus 30 cents to cover the fees that PayPal charges us."

Of course, this was not mentioned anywhere in the auction.

Has anyone else run into this cr*p? (It's a first for me). If you've seen this, how did you respond? I have no negs. and don't want any but geeez...

On a pricier item, particularly one on which the seller has a thin profit margin, the PayPal fees can sting the seller a bit. Ditto for a really cheap item, or when somebody makes separate payments for multiple auctions, and PayPal sticks you for that 30 cents or so plus fees, each time.

I do not fault sellers who do this, but your seller should have mentioned it up front in their auction. On some items, I do not mind paying the seller's fees in return for the convenience of using PayPal to purchase the item. I personally would never do this as a seller, though, since I prefer my bidders use PayPal, and I would want to encourage them rather than discourage them. I have even offered a discounted (or even free) shipping rate for PayPal users in the past. It beats waiting for checks to come in the mail, clear the bank, etc. People who do this may recoup the PayPal fees, but they discourage bidders from using PayPal by doing so. I suppose it is a matter of preference for the seller. And the bidder. It might have ticked you off, but it doesn't bother me much.

Some foreign sellers also have to pay additional exchange fees to convert the dollars to their currency, I believe. These folks are justified in asking the bidder to share some of that cost.

eBay policy states: "Sellers may not charge eBay buyers an additional
fee for their use of ordinary forms of payment, including acceptance of
checks, money orders, electronic transfers or credit cards. Such costs
should be built into the price of the item -- this policy reduces the
potential for confusion among bidders about the true cost of an item.
Further, some forms of payment surcharges, such as credit card
surcharges, are forbidden under the laws of many states, including
California." Thus, it would be illegal for a seller to charge a buyer
additional fees for payments made through PayPal.

Hmm. Interesting. I wonder if PayPal is considered an "ordinary" form of payment?

Since it has become so widespread, and is now owned by eBay, I suppose so...

I would pay by PayPal but I would not include the additional fees. If he had stated this in the original offering, eBay would have pulled it since it's against their rules (and he knows it). Additionally, after the sale is completed, I would forward a copy of his email to eBay to prevent others from being ripped-off.

Asking for extra to cover Paypal is an ebay no-no. I like Steve27's idea.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I didn't know it; maybe this seller didn't either. I've seen this done occassionally. I've never done it, but have thought about it. Paypal fees do add up! Now that I know, I'll not try it. A gentle email to the seller about Ebay's rules is justified.

    coindaughter,

The reason I say he knows it, is because of the fact it was embedded in an email after the auction and not part of the description. A naive person would have listed it in the text.

  • If you pay through Paypal using your bank account (No credit card) the seller is not charged any fees. But yes if you use a credit card he does have to pay fees. BUT, that is the cost of doing business. Paypal is an advantage to the seller. Accepting Paypal promotes more bids and higher selling prices by drawing in bidders that would normally not bid without being able to use a credit card. Ask any seller and they will tell you accepting Paypal does increase bids and sales expecially on higher priced items. If a seller does not want to pay the fees then he does not have to accept paypal. He can go back to the old paper forms of payment and watch his final selling prices fall. To heII with this guy he is a cheap a$$ loser. Make payment through Paypal for the bid amount plus shipping. If he gives you any flack report him to Ebay as a bead beat seller and Neg his A$$, then file a complaint with Paypal and recoup your money (within 30 days of payment). Force his hand..............

If you pay by PayPal using a Bank Account, the seller is charged the same as if you used a Credit Card. If you have a business account, they take the money regardless of the way you pay. The seller is giving you the option to use PayPal, but you need to pay the fees, else do not use PayPal.

These fees really add up to a seller, many no longer accept this form of payment for this reason.

If they stated they accept PayPal in the auction description, then I think they need to accept it. They should just change their account to a personal account, and only accept transfer payments. (that is what I have)

he didn't list it in the auction because the auction would have been pulled - it's not allowed. Paypal is a form of payment that is a convenience for the buyer - and the auction will realize a higher price to reflect this convenience. so in effect you've already paid the paypal fees.

i would tell the seller that if you knew that you had to pay the paypal fees when you bid, you would have bid 2.2% plus 30 cents less than you did.

don't fear negative feedback. a neg hurts a seller much more than a buyer. i had a seller try and gouge me for a ridiculous amount of shipping and handling when his listing did not mention it. he was a nasty old coot and said if i didn't want to pay $7 to ship (an item that should have been shipped for less than $1) then we can go right to swapping negative feedback.

i told him let's go. i reminded him how badly i could destroy his account and how stupid i am when it comes to revenge.

    he shipped it at cost.

  • I have, about 3 weeks ago. I won an item and there was NO mention in the description that if the buyer wanted to use PayPal that they would agree to a small fee. After I won the item and contacted the seller about how much they needed for insured shipping they told me that amount, and mentioned that if I were to use PayPal that I must add an additional $.41 to cover the fees. The amount was small, so I just paid it, but did mention it in the feedback. As far as I am concerned its part of conducting business, if the seller is NOT willing to pay the overhead costs required to sell the item(s) then they have NO business selling in what ever way they are selling IE: E-Bay with PayPal or retail or what ever. To pass a PayPal fee on to the buyer is cheap, tacky, and pretty pathetic.

I was un aware of that, I to only have a personal account.

Regardless I stand behind my last post. It is the cost of accepting Paypal and believe it or not accepting Paypal (credit cards) does promote higher bids and selling prices that more than cover the fees in the long run. This guy wants it all, to heck with him.

This just happened to me... I figured that $.61 was worth the convenience of not having to wait for a check to be mailed and to clear... I am reselling what I bought and this will mean I can send it off faster.

PS- it wasn't noted, but it was too small an amount for me to really care.

Oh, and PayPal wasn't listed in the auction, so I figured I was going to pay by check... the ability to pay with PayPal was a nice, unlisted touch image

  • From my memory, it's against Ebay policy to charge buyer fee for using online payment service.

Go to Ebay Help Section, and see if that's true, then email the seller about this.image

I wouldn't let anybody bully and push me around & break the rules because I was scared of a neg. I would dread being whipped with a wet noodle but what is a neg?

I would refuse to pay and just eat the neg.
