when you make a coin purchase mistake, do you....

keep it as a reminder of your stupidity or sell it off because you can't stand to look at it?

I end-up selling mine because the purchase irritates me too much.

  • Sell. The money could be used elsewhere and it helps keep your collection going in the right path. Some may say that you should keep it to remember, but who forgets a bad purchase even if the coin is gone? I know I do.

  • I have a little different perspective. Since I collect mainly Bust Halves, I am reluctant to sell the coins that I am less than satisfied with because even if they turn out to have some type of problem, they are still a variety I don't have. Most of my mistake coins are of a lower grade and didn't cost that much to start with. It also gives me a good excuse to upgrade with a better quality coin.

  • I sell them after they've been replaced or upgraded, never sooner. It's kind of like keeping them around to rub in their face what they should have been.image

If I sold all of my mistakes I would not have anything left.

I've sold some and kept others, I don't know why I haven't been consistent.

I've kept too many. I imagine I'm saving them up until I have enough to consign at one time to Heritage or Teletrade or something. But I did just return a coin today that didn't make the cut. (A pictureless auction winning from Teletrade -- I KNOW, but hey, sometimes I've been pleasantly surprised.) I don't usually return coins, and it felt pretty liberating.

  • I have a Morgan that I didn't pay attention, it had been harsly cleaned and just nasty, no idea what I saw
in it. I nailed it to a beam in the house so I have to look at it and remind myself to pay attention.

  • You mean flood the market with all those NGC lincolns? I now have to much respect for other collectors. I'll just wait a little longer and register a set with NGC.
