Common but colorful Morgans

I collect Washington quarters and they just don't often come with great color so I usually have to look elsewhere for color. I picked up these two 1885-O Morgans at a very small local show two weeks ago. They are both NGC MS64s that I probably overpaid for at $33 each, but I really like the colors. Do any of you look for great color over grade when buying a particular coin?
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.

As mentioned a good price. I collect Toned Morgans and color will always take preference over grade.
If It doesn't have great eye appeal, I don't want it.
  • Overpaid for? At $33.00 each? Man, I must really be out of touch with Morgan prices these days. Those coins look very nice and reasonably priced to me.

Edit: ArtR, do you own the coin you use as your Icon? Just curious.

Not bad, not bad at all. When I looked at the 1st obverse, I was thinking - I don't even consider that color, but of course, I then looked at the reverse. I can't imagine $33 being too much.

Just would like to point out that the 2nd reverse doesn't appear to have a mintmark, unless I totally overlooked it; and if I did, sorry.

That second 1885 Morgan doesn't seem to have a mint mark. At least I cannot seet it in the scan. Is it there??

    Yes I do.

  • You guys are right about the mint mark on number two. I guess I could make up some nice senior moment thing or talk about typing skills but I'm sure you could go to my eBay feedback form and prove I had purchased a Mavis Bacon Teaches Typing CD several months back. image
Truth is I was looking at several '85 Os and Ps when I bought these two. I never paid much attention to the mint marks on the two I bought, just bought them for the color. Sad thing is there's no "O" on the label of the second one either. Boy do I feel stupid. image
I guess this proves I bought the coin and not the plastic (and apparently not the m/m either).

At the local show I go to there's a guy with coins like this, but he wants 3-4 times what you paid.

Very nice coins and a steal at those prices particularly for the first one. I would offer you 25-50% more than you paid for coins like that. Good going.

    RLinn,

First, you got those coins at a great price! And the key thing you said was, "but I really like the colors". As long as you're buying coins you like, it's hard to pay too much. As the guy says, "you'll sometimes pay too much for the right coin, but you'll always pay too much for the wrong coin! You bought coins that are right for you.

I'll bet that 85-O is in an older NGC holder, correct? The reverse is obviously bag toned but the obverse shows the golden rim toning found on many coins housed in old NGC holders.

Beautiful pieces, but be careful....they're addictive. image

Yes I did. I caught a vest pocket dealer friend of mine looking to raise a couple of thousand dollars to buy an estate that had come his way at the show. He was looking to liquidate some of his stock to make the eastate deal that afternoon. I negotiated for about $600 worth of Washington quarters and asked him to throw in these two Morgans at his cost. At that moment he wanted the deal and the cash more than these Morgans.
