What do u collect?

well as most of u know im very much interested in type sets but the coins i need now dont just come along every day (flowing hair) so i think i might want a date/mm set to tie me over so i was thinking that if i asked u what u collect and u give me a reason why u do i might get an idea.

I'm working on an album of silver Roos and Frankies (circ)... they are relatively cheap and have a nice design (especially the frankies, IMO) They are also easy to find nearly anywhere you go (I just tend to spend my money on something else and seem to forget about filling the album image)

Colorfully toned commemoratives. I'm also starting to work on a Peace dollar set. I'm just too picky on both of these to put them together fast. image
  • I started collecting Washington quarters in 1965 when the metal composition changed. I am only interested in the business strikes from 1932-1964. I like them because they are 90% silver, and readily available up to MS63 at reasonable prices. I happen to collect at the MS65 - MS67 level and until the state quarters revived interest in the series they were still affordable at the MS66 level even for the early dates. There are several keys to the set that can provide challenge yet there are enough dates and m/m to keep you busy. There are surprisingly far more varieties than most folks imagine.
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.

Proof Jefferson nickels and Proof Shield nickels.

Edited to add: the Jefferson nickels because a nice set can be completed for comparatively little money. Shield nickels because they are our oldest nickel five-cent piece and I wanted to "go historical" after wading in moderns, and because nice proof Buffs are OUTRAGEOUS these days. (Shield nickels are neglected and underpriced.) Proofs because I like the look of the coins, and it's easier to complete a series without dealing with mintmarks.

  • Workin on registry set of modern gold (commems) but I'll buy another that I like (if the price is right of course)
  • Circulation Strike Franklins for my registry set - other than that - odds and ends - mainly anything that has some history behind it as well as some really eye catching pieces. I kinda like morgans and peace dollars as well - I guess I'm getting to the age where it's nice not to have to break out the magnifying glass to look at the date! image

Many moderns - with a focus on 1960-1969, especially SMS, toned Jeffs, Quarters from 1917-1939 (can't afford a 1916 I like yet), cameo proof classics, british copper, capped bust halves, and am starting a type set (representing each country) of trade dollars. I blame Spinaker for the dark-side stuff. I saw his collection the other day and it really distracted me. So many coins, so little money.....thank goodness I haven't started with gold.image

I've recently started working on a collection of 20th century major type gold coins. I think the indians are great and full of history. IMO they are works of art that I would be proud to own some of them (ah. . . some day) image I get bored easily with a series, that's why the tendency towards a type collection.
I've had great transactions with people like: drwstr123, CCC2010, AlanLastufka, Type2, Justlooking, zas107, StrikeOutXXX, 10point, 66Tbird, and many more!
  • A little bit of everything. i'm trying to fill over a dozen albums, plus any coin that has the eye appeal and is with in my budget.

  • because you like type coins you should do a holed type set in high grades (some are very tough to find in xf-au. Their is a lot of history in a holed coin and it is also a very cheap set to put together i just started one grades f-xf (very hard to find holed coins)

could take a few years if you what the hole in the same place on each coin (i want mine to all be in the 12:00 position

Mid grade Type Coins upto 1964 in XF/AU with a Decent look. Main series collected is the Mercury Dime with the Best Strike I can afford. Obverse strike on the Merc's is more important to me than the FB designation.

I collect Mercury Dimes,Walking Lib.Halves, Modern Gold and Silver Eagles, SLQ quarters. I really
love Mercury dimes the most. They exibit the best in Greco-Roman and early 20th century American
design. I think the design is very well centered, it has a great fluidity to it. The design almost flows.
I get the same sense from Walkers and SLQ quarters. I guess there is the same sense of motion in
flowing hair pieces and in alot of Bust material.. I often dream that Gasparo's Flowing Hair Dollar became a reality. Imagine if it did? The bottom line is, collect what you enjoy. Even though Bust material is expensive, I bet when you do get that piece, its worth the wait, even if its VG. What do you think?
