I would LOVE to Own an NGC MS67 Franklin-

But, this one isn't it. Shouldn't the lofty grade of MS67 provide an attractive coin regardless of the coin's other merits?

  • Yeah, Braddick. That coin is like an encapsulated Good News/Bad News joke.

    technical merit = 67
    eye appeal = -6

Dip it, dip it. It couldn't make it any worse looking. Could it?
  • I'm going to Heritage tomorrow afternoon. I'll see if they can fish it out of the vault for me. They have problems with toned coins, and it may not be as ugly as it looks.

  • NO NO NO!!!!

A pox on those heathens across the street! An MS67 Franklin should look sculpted, it should make you drool, it should make you want to throw caution to the wind! That piece merely makes you want to break wind! UGH! Take a look at the one below and see if you wouldn't agree that it's a much better candidate.

  • It's beautiful, Frank. Is it graded 67?

Maybe it's a 68 but they gave it 67 for the look.

Toned high grade Franklins (which is to say, 99.9% of 66's and above) just make me sick. I personally believe 99% of those toned high grade coins aren't even technically deserving of their grades. Heck, the graders can't even see the coin's surface, so how do they expect to be able to grade it? They can't: the coin gets high marks for "original undipped surface" even if ol Ben is suffering from a case of pizza-face syndrome under all the crud. I would not pay $500 or more for what essentially is a layer of dirt that looks nice on the registry.
  • The coin in the picture is a PCGSMS67FBL and it went at auction recently for $4,200 so needless to say, it isn't mine, but I got a picture of it!!!! image

I like to save pictures of really neat coins to show when questions get asked and such.

Looks to me that this one is "buy the holder not the coin." Oh, wait, that should be "BUY THE COIN NOT THE HOLDER." image

Believe it or not those are very collectible, I am putting together a set of toned Franklins. I have shown the rainbow toned one on here. This is one I purchased last night from L&C. Link I know some of you won't like it, but it tripped my trigger. It's in a PCGS MS65 holder.
  • Looks like a nice piece to me Mike - what color is it? the picture is a little dark.

green, red and brown. Haven't received it yet, this is a picture from his website. He has a ton of toned ones for sale.

Mike, that's one great Franklin. I too like those dark colors- just as long as there IS color (like the vivid green on yours-).
Plus, you have the advantage of buying it in a MS65 holder and didn't pay anything close to the MS67 pricetag (and yours is much better!).

The PERFECT example of buying the COIN. Not the Holder.

  • That's one of the nice things about the Franklin Series, you can actually get quality coins that are actually somewhat hard to come by and still not mortgage the farm.

That is a nice looking Frankie, and I actually prefer them white.
  • Actually that piece was rather nice and it looked like a good strike for the date and mint - I got out sniped at the last minute unfortunately - oh well - win some lose some! image

  • IrishMike--
I came soooo close to buying that coin a couple of weeks ago. The only reason I didn't is because I have a really wild toned 57 all ready in PCGS 65. But, I was so tempted. I would really be interested to know what you think of it when you get it. I have a feeling you will really like it.

Clankeye, I spent an hour just looking at his Franklins, and was tempted on some more expensive ones, but I kept going back to this one. I have never bought from them before, so I thought this would be an inexpensive foray. Unfortunately my Nikon is still sitting here broken down or I would shoot some pics when I get it. Maybe I can send it to the IHC fanatic and get a good picture posted.image I'll probably have to send him the three IHC's I just bought to photograph as well to get him to do it.

    Braddick:

As my free quarterly submission, I sent in a NGC 1955 PR-67 Franklin with a near-cameo. It crossed alright, so NGC is the way to go. Meanwhile, two raw Franklin proofs every bit the equal of the NGC coin (minus the near-miss cam) were graded PR-66 sted the 67s they deserved. In fact, the '58 was probably the tiniest shade better. But, hey, what do I know ... they ain't nickels!

Oops, as Rosanne Rosanna Danna (?) would say, "Never mind!'' You're talking about MS, nor PR... image

I saw this one too throughout the week and was curious what the ending would be. This is one honest Seller too. He's been nothing but forthright in the past with his eBay auctions and his distain for the crack-out game.
If he says it's a great Franklin, it is- you can count on it.
