WARNING! watch out for misattributed bust halves

FYI, there is a dealer in the chicago area with 2 misattributed bust halves. BEWARE, because the missed attrib's are extremely expensive screw-ups. both are in ngc holders.

#1 attrib'd as "1812/11 lg 8" in au, it is actually a "sm 8"
#2 attrib'd as "1836 reeded edge" in ms-61, it is actually a "lettered edge"

last time is saw this creep, i asked why he wasn't getting em corrected. his answer in a nutshell was "look, if anyone wants to make some money, all they gotta do is put these in an auction with the listed attributions". his asking prices are $10K and $4K respective, which would be a bargain IF they were the real deal.

look out, because i just heard he's going to be at countryside (chicago central-states) next weekend. also, he shows up at a lot of midwest shows.

i won't mention names, but you'd recognize him. looks like the creep he is, has a mustache and glasses, kind of a scrawny looking dude.

Why sell them? Wouldn't NGC have to pay you the difference in value or is their guarantee only for grade and not attribute?
  • I don't understand how NGC could mistake a Lettered Edge for a Reeded edge.
I am no longer looking for an 1815/2

  • They may have just printed the label wrong.

I would ask that too: Should not NGC pay for the misattribute? A reeded edge is a big difference from the lettered edge. That is one coin folks really look at for being correct. What is their policy about errors on labels?

p.s. sounds like a creep to me too.

the creep bought the coins at the price of the correct attrib's. he is trying to pawn them off on the unsuspecting. ie. knowing they were mis-attrib'd, he paid a few 100 bucks for each coin, and hopes to sell em to a newbie who can't tell and is going strictly off the ngc labels. sick, if you ask me.

  • This sounds like intent to defraud and should be illegal.

  • NGC would probably just say that they were a typograghical error and just offer to reholder.
