Have you ever lost or had a valuable coin stolen?

I've misplaced some for a few years but they usually turn up eventually. Anyone else?

Not valuable, but I had several stolen in a break-in a little over a week ago.

I had a coin switched when sent in for grading.
I think it was the dealer I gave it to who did it image

Not that my desk is messy but I swear there is a mobile black hole on the surface. Any coins I place over the black hole are lost forever.
    And that's the truth.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?
  • I'm happy to say no. The only ones to leave me are the ones I've sold or have given away.

Yes I also lost a $3,000 package to the postal worker in Newport beach. The USPS came through and paid the insurance claim but I sure had to work for it. mike

Among lots of others, a mint state 27-S 25¢ with a full head.

I frequently find boxes of coin sitting in my "coin room" that I forgot about. Usually odds and ends from large lots or collections I buy. Occasionally they'll be a gold coin in there, but nothing major in value (usually $1000 or less for the box).
  • Not really high priced, but I can't find that darn 46-D MS66 Lincoln with pink and light lime green toning to save my life.

Yep. I seemed to have "misplaced" at 1913-D Buffalo recently. image This one, in fact:

    1913-D

I can only say that I took it and several other coins to the Long Beach show in Feburary for a "show and tell" and haven't seen it since. Urgh....

Since reactineaddict did an identical thread over on the "Dark Side", I'll let my answer there stand for here, as well. I have a few horror stories.

  • I had a 1938 proof set disappear for about 4 yearsbut th only piece that I can think of that was actually stolen was a nice proof 1902 V Nickel. Its easily identifiable though. It has a rectangular planchet lamination (3mm X 5 mm) at 10"00 on the reverse.

Lost a beautiful Gettysburg, Stone Mountain, Lincoln and BTW in a break in. All with great toning. Still miss them.

  • Had a $20 Liberty ms65 and barber .50 pr64 stolen by local postal worker.

A friend & postal worker told me the biggest theives are in the post office, esp. at Xmas time. I would never ever send valuables w/o ins./reg. The same guy told me the theives are less likely to steal from the Reg. mail compartments, too many eyes watching.
