The coin will NOT grade up, as they claim. Too much chatter on the cheeks. I would say it is a nice 63, lower end 64.

Agreed. Just your typical, flashy (dipped once), chattery MS64.

I've allways thought of buying a rotated coin like this and see if I can rotate it back, I figured if I carried it everywhere with me and shook it in circles it would eventually rotate around.

Hey did you ever wonder what the tops of the telephone polls look like? I would think they would be white...what do you think?

How about the bottoms of telephone poles???
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I have at least a dozen coins in the old (rattler) holders and all you have to do it tap it on a hard surface and you can turn some of them around & around all day long if you want.

Yea this coin just makes MS-64, and 1881-S dollars like this are as common as marsh mud. Of course given the quality of the so-called MS-65 dollars I’ve seen lately maybe this one has a shot.

I really hate these little old PCGS holders that rattle and let the coin rotate around in the opening. The “prong” concept never worked. As a collector I've cracked coins out just because they were rattling. If you have a toned coin, this movement can give you a white spot that is in many ways like a rub.

The great urban myth is that ALL PCGS in coins in these little old holders were conservatively graded. PCGS actually had two phases when they were issuing these holders. There was a conservative phase, BUT there was also in liberal phase when they were overgrading the coins too.

Learn to grade! It's your only defense.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

  • It is a PCGS 1 slab but it sure is hard to tell from that scan. He managed to crop off almost anything that could identify the slab generation. (And I've seen slabs as late as the fifth generation sold on ebay being promoted as early holders.

As a piece of barely useful information, you have to turn the holder in the opposite way that you want the coin to turn if you're going to right it in the holder.
