NGC is 10 times better than PCGS in answering question.................... and listening to collectors!!

Thank you very much Mike for posting the question on NGC board.
Sounds like NGC grader gave us very detalied/honest opinion on the coins with questionable toning and their opinion is consistent with what Mark(coinguy) told me.
So my coin might be downgraded from MS62 to 61 because of the toning, but I was expecting for 63 or even higher...I found myself very greedyimage

what people always seem to forget is that ALL wild-n-crazy "monster" toning is artificial!!! it's just a question of whether it (artifiically) took place over the course of many years, or was it done just last week. silver will always tone to grey, not purple and pink! like so many aspects of the hobby, opinions come into play here, and there are no right or wrong answers.

btw, i like that "other" forum as well.

    1. Silver will NOT always toned to gray.

    2. And I guess all blast white coins are "naturally" that way image.

Silver doesn't only turn gray. But there is also copper in the mix and it tones differently. And mixtures of the alloy are not always the same, leading to different toning patterns. I have a '64 JFK that has toned with a nice gold around the edges. I guarantee it was not AT because it was an original roll and the reverse is pure white. And the toning is where the paper was in contact with the coin.

Wow, that's cool. I haven't checked out the NGC site that much, but they just gained a little more respect from me.

Their site is definitely better arranged. At times I've thought about switching. Especially since their registry accepts PCGS coins. And, being an ANA member, I don't have to pay for their collector's club to submit. I can just request a number from them.

nwcs, I believe that may be part of dorkkarl's point.

Your coins toned because they were in contact with paper that made them tone. Is that AT if you wrap it in the paper on purpose?

The fact that they toned was due to an outside influence. While some may say that wrap or album toning is natural and blow torch is not, it is still due to outside factors. I feel that there is no definitive way to prove or disprove if a coin is AT (let's forget the obvious ones if there are such coins).

The bottom line is that I believe a lot of coins that pass as "natural" are actually AT and I think the AT artists will only get better if people continue to pay multiples for toned coins.

    IMHO. Joe.

Then the question again becomes, what is AT? And is it artificial preservation (AP) to find ways to prevent the natural oxidation of silver? I think the line between AT and natural is whether the colors were part of the natural process of preservation, storage, or original handling versus an unnatural act to alter a coin purposely by recreating naturally occuring oxidation or creating new patterns of oxidation.

Agreed, what is AT? I'm not sure anyone can be sure.

Read the many times in various threads where coins have been BB'd because of AT and the writer claims the coin came out of packaging. Even the "experts" are not sure when a coin has been AT'd or not.

I would just be very leary about paying multiples for toned coins. It may just become a bubble that explodes.

    Joe.

I like toned coins myself, but I will never pay premium for either tone or white. I pay by grade and my estimation of how much I like it. But if I have a nice one with color, I don't mind someone who might want to pay a premium!!
