Here's a guy who has lost all the joy

A letter in this week's Coin World:

"Why don't you shut up about the Uncirculated 2002 Olympic $5 commemorative? There are collectors out there who work hard, do research and keep track of mintage numbers and plan accordingly. If some people aren't aware of this information because they didn't bother to do the research or haven't taken this hobby seriously, why do you think you need to blare it out over the Internet and your magazine?

"You're just backstabbing those of us who've worked hard to keep track of these things. Can't we be rewarded for our hard work and dedication? I've noticed that since you have been screaming that this is among the lowest mintage coins in modern commemoratives, sales have jumped to over 10,000. Prior to all your reporting, the sales had been stagnant for months at about 8,700, including the 5,000 in the four-coin set.

"Do you have a vested interest in seeing the mintage figures rise? I don't. I planned and ordered mine as soon as they went on sale in October 2001. I know you think it's your duty to inform the people, but mission accomplished! Now, enough already!"

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Man, that guy sounds kranky, er... cranky!
  • Wow. Money and greed can take over, even in Numismaticts. The hobby publications job is to report about the hobby!!!

It looks like his sure-fire investment scheme just went down the toilet. Too bad for him correct information about coins is so readily available.

I think I'll order some just to piss him off.

I can write a letter to Coin World thanking them for brining the low mintage to my attention. "Since I read your article I have purchased 2,000 for investment purposes. Thanks, Coin World!" image

    Shiro- You are baaaad!image
  • why don't they just mint like 1,000 of some coin, and call it a day. Then later on, the coin would be worth a small fortune, and the people that bought it can retire once they sell it.

hopefully, that little statement put a dent into this topic.

That guy sounds deranged. Why would you want to make such a self-serving snit in full public view?
  • Thanks for bringing it to my attention...I think I'll go order a few now. image
It's the "hunt" that makes this such a great hobby...
  • For the record, the half eagles are the butt-ugliest $5 commems the mint has ever produced, but the silver dollar actually looked better than I expected.

Among those who track the price of modern commemorative coins, it’s a well known fact that the “Uncirculated” versions of the coins have had lower mintages and have had better track records price wise in the secondary markets. The surprising thing is that more collectors have not picked up on this and started to buy more Uncirculated commems.

The reason that they have not bought them is the reason I don’t buy them. As a collector I like the Proof coins much more. Of course if collectors did start to by more Uncirculated commemorative coins the mintages would go up and the prices would come down. Such is the nature of economics, which was once called “the dismal science.”

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

he should be the poster-boy for enjoying what you collect. the day i buy a coin sheerly for investment purposes and get ticked off when it doesn't pay off is the day i quit collecting coins.

any profit made in coins for me is just gravy (and exciting because it allows me to buy MORE coins).

Here's a paraphrase of that letter:

"Waaaaaah! I can't make a lot of money because Coin World reported the news and did its job!" "Now I'm to cry, because I worked sooo hard looking up numbers and I feel I should be rewarded immensely."

    Puhlease!

  • I think that pretty well sums it up Strat.image
