I'm with goyankeez. If a thread is nasty in tone, just quit reading it. Sometimes a good thread will go bad though- - which is a shame.
If the rapid growth continues it may become necessary to split it up. I'd hate to see arbitrary divisions because at least a few would only post in their specialized area so it would cut down on the range of opinions. Separate forums for varieties, tokens, newbies may not be a bad way to start. If it ever gets big enough than it could be split up by series, but again this should be a last resort.
How about a separate forum just for trolls!? Everyone would be duty bound to go in and feed them once in a while so they stay put.
Welcome to the Boards, DCAMFranklin! I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
I feel that this place is a wonderful arena in which to learn and socialize. I think most people here are very decent people (could it be because coin collecting brings out the best in us?). I especially like the "policing" function that the boards have avidly acquired; it's really wonderful that people want to help others avoid problems, and pointing out suspicious auctions is a fantastic service to the hobby and to other board members.
I agree with the idea of having a separate forum for trolls. Great idea, cladking! I'd like to see a separate forum for exunomea (medals and tokens). In general, though, I'm quite satisfied with the size of the boards; if they were too much larger, we wouldn't be able to keep up with all the info.
Happy collecting!

Negative, LOL. This is a group of p*ss* cats, you should see some of the crypto groups. Now those people get nasty and ad homium attacks are the order of the day. I find the debates here more informative than negative.

something tells me there's a lot of people with nothing better to do than write gibberish on these forums. just curious as to how many unsuccessful, obese, old greasy coin dealers sit in there empty shops all day browsing these forums and posting notes, looking for anything to liven up their dreary existence.
Original post -- Why is this forum so negative in tone?
Because it is a microcosm of humanity. Not everyone has come to realize that they have been given just one life and that they can be in control of their destiny, and that being negative is being reactionary, which is giving control of their lives to someone else.
But.....thank goodness for negative people!
"I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't!" makes it easier for those of us who say "I can, I can, I can!"
"I can't graduate from high school." - those people cut our lawns - if we didn't have them, I'd have to spend less time doing what I want because I would have to re-direct my attention every week to my lawn.
"I can't become a coin dealer." - those people keep competition low and margins higher than if there were more competition.

Hey. actually I do. The vast majority of my coins are circulated, and have had many different fingerprints on them. Just makes them that much more interesting.

there are reputable landscaping companies throughout the good old U.S. of A. and i'm going on the assumption that he doesn't let the drop out down the road cut his lawn. also, there are probably more reasons why people aren't interested in being a coin dealer than there are coin dealers. my primary reason would be that there seems to be a tendancy for something to suck the fun out of things when the primary consideration is money. i personally like the hobby too much to sacrifice that fun, but that's just my reason.
how do you feel about it pat? what's your feeling on both of the good negatives?
Thanks all for your replys. If I can pick on someone for an example....L Sperber/Legend. Do you think she contributes to the forum only to make money or defend herself? She has risked openly being here and expressed honest and insightful opinions IMHO. For that she has gotten flamed, misquoted, and accused. And she apologizes! This will keep driving people with knowledge, not just opinion or anxiety, away. The forum is what we make it. Why not just listen and learn. Agree or not and post why. Exchange thoughts not bitterness. How about a LOUD outcry when people abuse another member? K
PS For those negative, I have purchased one coin... 0.5% of my last three years purchases...from Legend. They have no idea who I am. I do frequently bid against them at auction, however.
Good people, its a tough world out there and this Forum merely reflects reality. It can be kind, cruel, generous, petty, gross and at times a bit silly. While most of us try to be civil most of the time, sometimes its just someones turn to be the target for the night. We have to suck it in, take the lumps and defend our positions as best we can. This Forum with all of it warts, is still the best place I have yet seen to get the facts splained to us. Every time my feelings get hurt I swear to myself I will not be back and yet 10 minutes later the little bear is sending a reply.
If people wish to leave , then I wish them bon voyage and my fond wish , that they toughen up a bit, before the world eats them alive. Be kind to each other if you can people , because this is the only world we have to live on. Bear
Nic-- Most of the people on these boards who get flamed bring it on themselves. They have something to say but can't seem to do it without coming off as condescending, abrasive, arrogant or overly aggressive. It's a winning combination of Super Ego and self loathing that is uniquely human. I'm as guilty of it as anyone.
A lot of the combatants on these threads remind me of The Black Knight in the movie, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Even after having all his limbs hacked off in battle, he's still rolling around on the ground trying to bite someone.
I get what you're saying, Nic. A kinder, gentler coin board. Okay, maybe for a few days. Someone once said, "The only peace man ever knows is in the time that it takes to reload." I tend to think human nature will prevail.

I'm either the world's worse "investor" or the hobby is ONLY about fun.
But I like your term, "good negatives".
Food for thought.
