Bust & Classic half collectors: Your opinion please?

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,963 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just won this lot off of eBay (1373499017) and am certainly hoping the photos look like the coin. It appears to have nice detail and strike for an XF40, but certainly I'm open to any and all Bust and/or Classic Collectors opinions.
I know it's not a tough coin, but try finding one of these problem free?

If it looks like the pics, when it's sitting in your hands, then I like it....

But I don't like PCI. Crack Ms Liberty outta that thing, Braddick. Set her free.

The surfaces appear to smooth when I look at it. It seams hard to imagine picking up the wear for XF without having more visible nicks, dings, and scratches. Looking again, it looks more AU than XF. Not much wear there at all.

Nice coin. I'd think she deserves a vacation in Newport Beach for a couple weeks. Get her the $15 room.

  • Congrats, nice looking coin, nice price too. As for not providing a link, I wouldn't have a clue myself. Again Congrats. Bob
  • In the description JUST BACK from THE PCI GRADING SERVICE. Why not just sell it raw, and save everybody the trouble. Maybe he could have gotten a few more bids, too.

    Pat,

I hope I'm wrong, but the coin looks off to me. Admittedly, my eye isn't good for the reeded edge capped bust halves...

The coin has too much wear on the stars but too much center detail. That doesn't make any sense to me. With the new edge, the stars should've been protected even more. The reverse looks great to me.

Coin looks absolutely beautiful! The toning looks superb. The bust halves are usually cleaned. Now the scan is tilted so it may look different when you get it. Seems to have very nice contrasting coloring from original surfaces though. Notice how the fields are slightly lighter than the outer devices? A classic original toning look. A few rim nicks, nothing too bad. Looks much better than XF to me. XF45 or better.

Hope you scan it and let us see when you get it.

Others here have pointed out what I noticed also. rim nicks and the stars look odd? Detail looks almost too good for XF 40. mike
  • If it looks as good in person as it appears from the scan you did good, it is not unusual for stars on this pieces to not be as well struck as the central devices so I would not be to worried about that. The severity of the rim nicks might be a different story but from the scan that don't look to bad, give us an update when you receive it.

"It is not unusual for the stars to not be as well struck as the central devices?" That seems unusual in any series to me, with the exception of incuse devices. Notice I didn't say impossible. I think the image is distorted. For those of you who don't know, this is what a loupe without corrected lenses will do too - distort the outer edges.

XF45 is MUCH better than XF? hmmmm. The image does look better than XF though, so I would assume there is something about the piece that you should be scrutinizing.

Hey Braddick; it could be retoning over a harsh dip. I don't know how PCI is with the red certs these days.

<< <i>JUST BACK from THE PCI GRADING SERVICE(NEW GOLD/ PROBLEM FREE LABEL) >>

The gold label from PCI doesn't necessarily indicate it's problem free!!! It's what all coins slabbed by PCI get regardless of problems or lack thereof.
It doesn't appear to be cleaned, dipped and retoned maybe. Looks more like an AU-53, maybe a 55.
    Nice pick Braddick!

Pat I don't care what the name is on the slab if the coin looks as good as the photo you are a big time winner on that sweet lady. Congrads.

be careful, dudes, you can't graded the reeded's like the lettered edge coins. the r.e. always look about a grade higher.

i prefer the open-collar coins overall, but the r.e.'s are nice too.

Dorkkarl is right. The steam press was used to make the Reeded Edge halves, hence you should expect a better strike for these coins than their lettered edge counterparts.

The weak stars are probably due to mis-aligned dies, which was common in coinage from that era. I have one of these in MS 64 which has 3 consecutive soft stars.

The image is dark, so I couldn't see as much as I'd like of the coin. However, there was quite a bit of detail re the curls in Miss Liberty's hair. There does appear to be a bit of wear on the top of her hair, below the 'liberty,' hence the coin is circulated. Couldn't venture an opinion re the coin's surfaces. Expect contact marks in the field above the eagle on the reverse & on Miss Liberty's face on the obverse.

my simple rule is to grade em just like its a l.e., then subtract 8-10 points (for circ's).
