Question about 1941 S Walker Half

I recently ran across several Very Early NGC Graded toned walkers that have been off the market for years, the 41 S is graded MS 64, but the strike does'nt even come close to comparing with the a 1944 MS64 and 42D 64, the toning is a little better on the 41S, it has minimal marks, just a very weak strike, (I guess) looks almost AU on the head/ left arm and Skirt. I guess what Im asking is the 41S normally found in MS with a weak strike and could still warrant this grade. Thanks for any help, the coin has beautiful pink/high yellow light blue and lime green sunset toning front and back. Sorry I dont have a scanner at this time to upload photo.

Yes. The S mint coins are notorious for weak strikes.

The 1941-S Walker comes very poorly struck in general. That's the main reason why the coin jumps on the Gray Sheet from $155 in MS-64 to over $800 in MS-65. A weak strike down grades a coin by a point or more. From the perspective of marks a coin could be MS-65, but if it is poorly struck, there is no way that you can expect it to get an MS-65 grade.

You can't expect a 1941-S to look as good as a 1944-P unless you are prepared to pay a big premium for it in a very high grade. I look for reasonably well struck and attractive 1941-S Walkers in MS-64, and I'll pay a premium for them because a collector who knows the series will pay over $200 for a really nice one.

  • Bill and Russ,
Thanks alot, after looking at the coin more closely, the fields are 65 with the reverse a 66, just weak on the points I mentioned, may be worth a try for an upgrade now because of the toning and I think this coin was graded around 1989.

The grading services are well aware of the premiums that result if some coins are raised by one point. For that reason it's hard to get the coins into the next holder. You could be wasting your money if the piece is not really well struck.
