seated dime

Trying to upgrade some of my seateds. This is getting tricky. I'm looking for xf/au original stuff with nice steel-grey toning. The following is on ebay: #1372327911.
1)Do the rim dings detract, am I being too critical?
2)Is it a bit to dark? In the ground?
3)Is the rest of the coin really attractive!?
Your input is always appreciated in advance-Eugene

It is hard to tell with the black and white photo. It may be hiding the natural colors of the coin (which could mean that it has been cleaned).

I never buy raw coins on eBay. Unless you know the seller always has good raw coins and is honest. For me it's not worth the risk.
  • What's with the "High Rim"? Is this a variety, an error, a strike peculiarity, or just a comment on the amount of wear the coin has?image

1853 Dimes are notorious for being extremely well struck. No doubt the explanation for the raised rim. As for varieties, at least 6 obverse dies and several reverse dies. A very common date with little price increasing potential. I'd evaluate it on it's eye appeal, taking into consideration the rim dings, and common, dark toning. It doesn't appear to have been cleaned. The dings would require a net grade from ANACS. Given the price difference between VF-20 ($15) and XF-40 ($45), this coin's marketability is forever destined to be raw. I'd patiently pass on this one......just my opinion.
