What's the most times you've submitted one coin

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,148 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just saw the thread on the most coins in a submission... so...

What is the most amount of times you've submitted the same coin for grading?

My answer: 1... I have sent one coin in once... although when I saw the posted grade, I called and they "regraded" it for free... but the damn thing stayed a 63 image

    2 times. A 1978-P Ike I pulled from a mint set. 1st grade MS66, 2nd grade MS66.

I also sent in for regrade two coins someone else originally submitted. A 1930 SLQ upgraded 64FH to 65FH, and a 1880 3CN upgraded PR65 to PR65CAM.

If I ever feel like selling... to NGC it goes... Maybe I'll get to a coin show some day and get a FREE opinion (other than Dixon's of 66+ and the boards 67ish based on the scan... Dixon saw the coin)

  • I think we need a poll for this thread. I've only submitted a coin once... never repeatedly.

Twice. This is a bit of a story. Paid $35 for a 'BU' 36 S Walker in the 1960s at a local auction. It sat in the 2 x 2 holder for 30 years.

Took it to a dealer. It was nice, but had a thin yellowish-tinged sulfur layer on the top of the coin's surface. Dipped it - presto, a killer coin. Sent it to PCGS & came back in an MS 65 holder.

A year & a half later, I got curious. Lined up my Walker against 8 or 10 others graded MS 65 by PCGS. Mine looked better. Sent it back to PCGS for an in holder re-grade. Came back in an MS 66 holder.

I did look at a few 7s, & don't think mine will upgrade again.

15-20 times for one coin and most of those were the express submissions. Wanted MS66, always came back MS65, saw it later in an MS67 slab. image

I have a 1957 Quarter I've sent in 5 times. It's in a 67 holder and is much nicer than the other 67 coins I received. PCGS has never graded a 68 coin so I guess they are resistent to giving it a 68. I'm prepared to send it in 20 times. It's madness!!

Hey Airplanenut--aren't you supposed to be reading those three books? The summer is almost over.

3 times about to be 4 (I finally signed up with PCGS, waiting on my 4 freebies.) 1955 proof quarter that should be a 69CAM, currently in a 68CAM holder. Blast white and never dipped, I saw it come out of the box. Franklin from same set is in a PCGS 67CAM holder at my local coin shop right now and the frosting is much weaker on it. Pop report has me wondering if I really have a shot at it tho, we'll see.
  • once but I'm thinking of resubmitting one.

I have a few I've submitted for crossover 3 or 4 times. There's a couple I will continue to submit every 4 or 5 months until I die or they cross.

  • 5 for several 1950's Lincoln ultra cameo proofs. 4 to PCGS and the final submission to NGC.
I also had to submit one and resend 3 times because of holdering problems.

  • 4 times, same coin. Purchased a raw 32-D Washington from a CW advertiser. He said it would slab 63. I asked for a guarantee and he said he would guarantee it would slab 62 but he didn't have time to submit. image We finally agreed I would submit and if it didn't slab 62 I had choice to return for refund plus fee or keep coin with negotiated price on final slab grade. Got the coin, it was bright and luterous with great eye appeal but had the slighest rub on the cheek (album slide wear?) so called to say it only looked AU-58 to me but I would live with our deal and submit.

    1st PCGS AU58
    2nd NGC AU58
    3rd ANACS AU58
    4th PCGS AU58

I kept the coin after reaching a fair negotiated price with seller. Have had several dealers tell me to resubmit, it is a sure upgrade. I don't believe it and won't. It is still a great coin for the grade.
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.

I believe three times and this was over a 8 year period. A 1919-S Dime.

    Originally PCGS MS64 (bought 1993)
Sent in holder for regrade. Came back MS64 (1)
Cracked it out and was raw for many years.
Sent it to PCGS in 1999 and came back in body bag. QT (2)
Sent it in to PCGS in early 2002. MS65! (3)

    So much for consistancy. lol

  • I had an incredible PCGS MS-67 1946-P Dime that I thought was a lock for MS-68. I personnally sent it in to PCGS three times and it keep coming back MS-67. I sent the coin to Mitch and had him walk it through at $100.00 a pop and after two tries it finally made it. The sad part is once it made MS-68, it was too valuable for me to keep so I sold it to Mitch. I still miss that coin.

Here is a scan of the dime I had linked to my former Registry set. It is listed as a 67 but is now a Pop1 68

zero (personally), 2 through a dealer. here's the story on 1, which i like to retell because it got me on my anti-plastic kick:

bought a 1926-S buffalo in pcgs-35 (1st gen. holder) at the height of the plastic boom, cracked it out for my set , stored it for 8 years in archival quality holder w/ climate control. decided to sell the set a couple of years ago, resubmitted the keys to ANACS, it came back "scratched, corroded, net F-12"!!! lost my a$$ on that one coin.

i learned my lesson fast. been plastic-free ever since.

Butch's 1946(p) Dime in PCGS-MS68 is one of the nicest PCGS-MS68 dimes I have ever handled (and I've handled most of the entire pop). It is a classic example of why one should never give up on a coin they believe in. According to Butch, it worked on the 5th try - well, I would have tried it at least 25 more times easy before I would have grown tired of it. The coin was a "lock MS68" in my opinion.

Thanks again Butch for the opportunity to handle that piece. image Wondercoin.

Twice. Its a 1927 SLQ. The first time I sent it in to PCGS it came back graded AU58FH. I can't see any where whatsoever on the coin. I've even looked at it at 30x magnification and can't see any rub or wear of anykind. I resubmitted and, once again, it came back AU58FH. After that I decided it wouldn't be financially prudent of me to resubmit it again. I guess the graders at PCGS must have far better eyesight than I could ever hope to have, because they must see something I can't.
