1965 SMS Jeff - will it cam?

Have any of you guys seen many of these coins? I found a nice 1965 today, and I'm not familiar with how much mirror the fields must have to get cam/dcam designation. This coin looks solid cam to me, and the shadow on Monticello is not a frost break, but just a shadow. The devices are very frosty, but I'm used to looking at Kennedys, and the nickels have a soften satin look. How does this one stack up?

  • It's awful Don. But as a Jeff collector I can take it off your hands. I'll even send you a nice check.

Oh, you've heard that one before?

Anyway it does look awfully nice and the '65 is way harder than the others. The only thing is the area on the left side of Monticello that looks like weak frost. If it doesn't grade cam for that I would still like the coin. Please keep us posted.

    Dave,
I have a lot of SMS nickels in non-CAM holders that I thought should have made it. Here are obv & rev scans of 3--1 made CAM, the other two did not. The three are in the same order, obv & rev. Answer on which made it later. Editted to add: These look nicer in person than on the scans.

  • I guess the reverse fields do look satiny in that scan. I'm not sure what to make of it. I would guess the fields to need to be deeply mirrored for the cameo designation...
  • I would say no.

It looks like it has the frost to get the cameo designation, but PCGS really looks at the mirrors...can't tell from your scans, but I think it might pull it off. Not DCAM certainly.

  • Very nice -- I haven't submitted any lately and the usual caveat about photos, but I think it would readily make it.

In my experience they give the nickels a bit of slack compared to the silver coins. Nickel doesn't strike up as well as silver. I've gotten some DCAMs that I was a little surprised (not complaining!) to get.

Hard to tell from scans, but I say no on the obverse. But, who cares what I think. Send it in. The cost is low relative to the potential reward. If it has a shot, and it certainly has at least that, why not.

Thanks Guys. I really appreciate to counsel, and your expertise. I will probably submit it to satisfy my curiosity, but I won't resell it. I kinda like it, and I've been looking for good cam examples of SMS coins to build my own type set. Thanks.

i think it may be a borderline cam but as others have said it really hinges on the mirrors. you may want to wash it before sending it in.

hey brian, i'm guessing coin number three, the one on the right is the cameo coin, and i'll say MS66CAM. the other two look like they have that sleepy haze which will probably hold back don's coin.

    Wow Brian,

I couldn't have guessed from the pics, and admit I'm a little suprised by the answer. I guess mine has an outside chance, and I appreciate your post.

  • Aw, Brian, why'd you post that -- I was going to try to bet someone $100 that Don's would make it. image
