The 1933 Double Eagle must be Cursed!

I just saw this article from Coin World online about the Egyptian government now looking into how the coin from King Farouk's collection left the country! Now yet another government wants to get their hands on this coin! Here's a quote:

<< <i>The spokesman said it is the general policy of the Egyptian government to attempt to retrieve items identified as antiquities that may have been stolen or smuggled out of Egypt. He said it is unclear what action, if any, Egypt's government may pursue. >>

The mint should have just melted the stupid thing!!! Of course then they wouldn't have had a benchmark for pricing when they release the other 10 rolls they have to the public!

If this is true, I imagine the $6.6 million is the motivating factor.

To answer the question, how the coin left the country; well, when governments change upon assassinations and coup d'etat(s), there is a tendency for the misappropriation of the valuables of the one deposed.

Wonder why no complaints were lodged prior to the final "gavel". I suppose 6.6 mil can overcome the anti-American and anti-American things sentiment.

Maybe someone needs to make a "Titanic" like movie and have the last scene be someone throwing the slab into the sea? The question is, who would play the model posing for the engraver???

Those camel humping commies are full of crap! The antiquities laws are to keep looters from destroying ancient historical archeaolgy sites. If they are such great Islamics why do they want something that originated with the Great Satan? Why are they worried with something material? Wasn't the Egyptian government the ones that sold it in the first place when they sold off their disposed king's estate? Their loss. Too bad. So sad.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • It is my understanding that the "1933 Curse of the Saint" says that any owner of the coin is destined to be harshly cleaned (at least financially) and possibly rubbed all the way to out.
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.

This 1933 double eagle was in King Farroke's (sp) collection that the Egyptian government sold at auction in 1954. The auction was run by a bunch of nimrods. The coins were put in large lots with great rarities mixed in common dross. When the U.S. Government got wind of the 1933 double eagle, it demanded that the piece be returned to the U.S., but the Egyptians refused. The coin was withdrawn from the auction and was probably sold privately.

The Egyptians can go pound salt. They didn’t say a peep about this until the auction yielded $7 + million. The U.S. government has transferred the coin with a free title to the owner, and that should be end of it. The Egyptian laws were set up keep Ancient artifices from leaving the country, not a 1933 U.S. coin.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

am i the only one who sees the humor in the fact that all these countries despise our way of life and more than anything our government and the freedoms we enjoy but they love our money!! Egypt should be told in no uncertain terms, and by as high ranking official as possible in a public forum, to pound salt where the sun don't shine and to packup there collective bags and fly to the moon.

  • Not to mention that the Egyptian government has little use for 6.6 million dollars American. That's like being ticked off that you paid for a Snickers bar with a F-12 common date Buffalo. It stinks that you didn't realize it but it is really inconsequential. btw- been reading the board for months, just decided to say hello.

    Dog,

Thanks for saving me some typing.

    Keets,

No, you're not the only one. It's always amazed me that we are condemned by their left hand, while their right hand reaches for our wallets.

  • They are just looking for some baksheesh. Its worth a shot in their opinion that the US government will say what the hell give them a couple of Million. Tourism is the life blood of the country and after last year I can't imagine things are very good in Egypt. I went their a few years ago and was told by one of my guides that he had not work for 12 months after the terrorism where the 12 Germans were killed outside of Luxor. Actually this is probably the time to go. The Egyptians are very security concise about their tourists and there will be no crowds.
