Hello All- New Member on board

Hi Everyone,

My name is Jay, I just joined PCGS and have been reading the forum for some time now. You all seem like good people, and I am anxious to get to know you. I am from Wisconsin and mainly collect early type coins. I am working on a registry set and am enjoying the challenge. I just sent in my first four coins for grading today, and am anxious to see what type of luck I may have. It really seems a shame to get them slabbed as I enjoy looking at them more out of the holder, but it does seem that everyone is pretty focused on the grade of a coin. I guess my theory is this: I try to buy coins with above average eye appeal, which is subjective of course, but whether the coin comes back Au58 or MS64 it is still the same coin. Obviously I am not looking at the difference in value. I have found myself paying MS60 money for good Au coins. Is this normal?? To be honest I think many AU58 coins look better than some in an MS65 holder, so how do you figure a value for this????

  • Welcome to the boards. As a fellow type collector I find AU-58 better looking than MS-61 like you mentioned. You may not have to pay more, but it all depends upon the series and how scarce they are. Good luck with your submissions. Do you have a Type registry set?

as best as i can figure it out, all my coins have their value determined twice, once when i buy and once when i sellimage i seem to be having a spate of AU58 grades returned to me lately. it makes me more observant and more cautious about what i submit. welcome aboard.

  • the price of something is what you're willing to pay for it.

If it's beautiful to you, and you underpay, then woo-who!!!

If it's fugly and you overpay for it. . . .d@mn!

Hi Jay, and welcome. I am a new member, as well as a collector of early material. I have paid 62 and sometimes 63 money for PQ AU58s . When you find a coin that has gorgeous tone, little or no marks, with just a smidgen of rub........grab it. 58 is a magic grade. I would take a PQ 58 over an average 62 anytime..........especially if its a rare coin. Again welcome, and have fun!
  • Welcome Wisconsin! I grew up in Chicago, but I won't hold it against you that you live in the land of Cheese! As far as your question, buy the coin and not the plastic. If it's PQ, it'll get stong money regardless of the grade on the slab.
  • I do have a type registry set. It is called Wisconsin's Finest. I currently have only two coins in it, but am waiting for some more to get graded and some more to arrive in the mail. I never realized how time consuming it could be to build a nice set. It sure is not easy to find nice coins in the grade range I am looking for. I can see this set will take many years to complete, as some coins are not available, and then there is always the problem of n ot having the money at the time they do. I am sure you all know what I mean.
