PR70's?

As I am trying to get a complete set of PCGS grade levels, I was looking to find a PR70 or two. However, they are few and far between.

In fact, there are zero non Kennedy PR70's and I would get one of those but Russ has poo-pooed them.

So, where can I pick up a PCGS PR70 or two. Preferably a Modern Commen?

I didn't really poo-poo them. I just said I thought it was insane to pay 30 times as much for a coin that looks essentially the same as a coin one grade lower. HMM...maybe that is poo-poo.image

I also have some concerns about the fact that over the past three years PCGS has made only one in the series, yet made 118 in the three years prior. Either there really is no such thing as a 70 in Kennedy halves, or a bunch of 69 owners got screwed on their submissions.

I'd leave the PR-70 to the theoretical crowd. There’s darn few of them and fewer still that are really PR-70. And to add to the fun, the coin can grow a spot, and it’s not PR-70 anymore. I can live without one. I’ve been collecting for over 40 years, and best I’ve got is an Brilliant PR-67 1936 Buffalo nickel. There might be a PR-70 hiding in one of my new Proof sets, but I’m not going to spend the money to find out.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I think Russ is right on the money on this one(no pun intented). You have to do what makes sense. To me paying out all that money for a 70 coin when it really is essentially the same thing as a nice 69 doesn't make sense. I really like the idea of building a grading set but in this case buying a 70 coin to learn what a 70 should look probably won't help. In fact last month I bought 5 Unc commems(since sold) that were graded PCGS-70. The coins were graded a few years ago. I compared them to my MS-69 coins and was left scratching my head. I'd venture to say that if you showed someone 5 coins-- 4 nice MS-69's and one MS-70 no one could pick the 70 out with any certainty. Kind of insane that one of them is worth $750 with people lining up to buy them and the other only $55. The only difference is the label. I think we put too much value in labels in our culture--whether it's clothes, cars or coins. And that's all I have to say about that.
  • The Numish,

I wholeheartedly agree with the whole labeling thing.

But, hey its a one time purchase of 1k or so and I can then enjoy it for the rest of my life!

And, unfortunately labeling is here to stay. And don't blame this generation. Its been around forever as far as I can tell (I'm no historian image

I occassionally break down and buy an Abercrombie which is totally worthless. At the least PR70 is worth a little more than a PR69 at the very least. image

the thing that bothers me about PR70s is that if you cracked it out and resubmitted it what are the odds that it would come back PR70 again? about the same as the odds that any PR69 would come back a PR70. for the premium you have to pay for virtually no difference in quality (except for the number on the label) it's just not worth it.

Bill - If the coin should gow a spot, you can quote Will Shakespeare. " Out, out damn spot, will these hand nere be clean"(Macbeth), or see spot run, run spot run. Of course you could tell your ophthamologist that you are seeing spots before your eyes. Bearimage

  • Agreed pr70dc are probably way over priced compared to a solid pr69dc. That being said. I plead guilty to having bought a pr70dc SBA. Just wanted the novelty of having a pr70dc coin. Is it alot nicer than some of my pr69dc? With my inexperienced eye, I honestly cannot see a difference. Still I am happy with the coin and that is all that matters.

  • If you really want a PR70 I'd just go and buy an ICG PR70, there are plenty of those around.
  • If you're determined to get one, you shouldn't have to spend $1K if you don't care what it is -- with patience probably $300 or so. Personally I'd pick up a nice PR69 and a Sharpie. image
