The Top 10 Reasons Why I Collect AT'd Coins

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
#11 Because I have no idea how to tell the difference between an AT coin and a genuine toned coin.

#12 Because I think the grading services are too paranoid and some AT coins are in fact genuine toned coins.

10. Because I can.

9. Because they're so much easier to find and identify than naturally toned coins.

8. Because everyone else can spot them so quickly, they cost less.

7. Because they look so darned pretty.

6. Because with all the uncertainty in coin collecting, at least with AT'd coins I know what I'm getting.

5. Because unlike naturally toned coins they ARE still making these everyday.

4. Because when I can't find one I need on eBay I can make it myself.

3. Because there's always some newbie collector who won't think they're AT'd that I can sell to.image

2. Because I can always find at least one grading service to slab them it means they're real.

1. Because it pisses everyone else off.

  • I don't mind if you collect AT coins. The only problem I have is when you sell them to newbie collectors who don't know any better. In my opinion that's taking advantage of the hobby and that's why so many newbies drop out.

sorry about that steve, i added a wink. you should know i'd never do an unethical thing like sell a coin to an under-educated collector-----that's against forum policy!!image

  • To each his own.... I mostly collect blast white coins. Coins with color make me think about rust and corrosion.

What would your slabbed coins be worth if the grading services went out of business? What would your coins be worth if the Internet was taken offline for good?

Since we are talking about AT here, can anyone tell me what can be done if you own a couple PCGS graded coins and you believe them to be AT'd? Does PCGS have some guarantee that backs their grading on this. Or is it tough luck?

As someone who has made perhaps more than his fair share of critcism, some of these artificially toned coins could fool if not all of us, certainly the vast majority, including many graders. Sometimes the only way to be positive is to see the same pattern of coin being presented for grading, but then it seems some of the "coin doctors" seem to be a head of the game. It's no wonder that recently they have been tightening up on what they believe to be artificially toned coins. Look at the number of posts in this forum decrying the fact that they had their submissioned body bagged for AT and then look at the criticism they take when someone posts a coin in a slab and that looks AT to them. I spent some time in a class with Scott Travers and about all I can say is I sometimes spot fairly obvious attempts at ATing a coin. Other than that, I don't know what the responsibility of the slabbing company is. How do you conclusively prove one coin is ATed? A coin that has been slabbed by a reputable company i.e.

If the grading services take the attitude that any coin that is questionable doesn't get slabbed then the coin doctors are going to have to be close to perfect or the time, effort and expense of doing the work is for nought. Since the motivation to doctor is profit if you remove the profit incentive you eliminate the motivation the doctors have to expend their time, effort and energy to doctor coins. Unfortunately the honest dealer/collector also suffers in this scenerio but don't blame the grading servcies. The onus in on the doctors.

I'll take an ATed icon over a empty box with a red x in it image.
