Oh, great. Now PCGS is tightening up on the coins I collect!

I've noticed it for about six months now. I didn't want to really say anything- it was just a speculation at first. Now, I'm seeing it more and more and it is troubling me.
PCGS is tightening up on the PO01 and FA02 grades!! Seriously! I recently picked up a PCGS AG03 1921 Peace dollar (off of Teletrade. Thanks Keith for the heads up on that one). I received it yesterday and it is a FA02 all day long. How DARE PCGS give it the AG03 grade! Rims worn into reverse lettering... Wait. What am I talking about!? There is NO reverse lettering, it is so worn away.
Nice, smooth pocket piece and it's FA02 (who should know better than me, I ask you?).
So, while PCGS is tightening up on your MS65 GEM coins and bodybagging monster toned coins I'm getting jipped on my end with coins that severely deserve the DOWNGRADE.

Knock it off PCGS! Give me back my PO01/ FA02 type coins!*

*And while you're at it: make all their pops available in your pop reports! image

    Braddick,
Looks like they are on to your gig. I wonder if they think they are being generous by bumping the low-end coins a point or two?

    Braddick:

If you cracked your Peace dollar, stuffed it in your pocket for another 4 months of wear and then resubmitted it, do you think PCGS would bag it for AW (artifical wear)? image

PCGS always tightens grading on coins that go up in value. When the Ikes were hot the grading tightened. When SBAs were hot grading on those tightened. PCGS must know what you pay for those PO-01 and FR-02 coins and since they are seeing the value in them they are tightening their grading on them.

I think there is more truth to what Greg is saying than sarcasm!
It's funny though, to tighten up the grading on high grade GEMS means PCGS is conservative.
To tighten up the grading on low grade coins, PCGS becomes looser!

Ok, now it's time to embarrass myself. I paid about $55.00 by the time the Teletrade fees were paid. I know that's Fine15 money- but I've wanted one of these in super low grade that was also problem free. Each one I locate to send in for grading have had problems. So many 1921 Peace dollars have been altered (cleaned, holed, or too marked up) by the time they get to the AG03 or lower stage.

I don't think you embarrassed yourself at all. Many of us pay premiums for choice coins, and it is just as hard to find a problem free coin in FR-02 than it is MS-66. $55.00 with fee's is not that bad.

I guess the people at PCGS are just tight at one end, and looser on the other.

I agree Braddick. By not showing the lower grade pops, they could seriously be causing you to pay way to much.image

Maybe they should turn off their lamps when trying to grade these...image
