Just for fun: Cracked out a bunch of slabbed coins-

-and put them in a brand new Type Album!
Over the course of years I've accumulated a bunch of slabbed misc. coins that aren't really high grade, but not they're not super, problem free low grade either. Stuff like a PCGS AU55 No Cents 1883 nickel and a PCI VF25 1855 Arrows Seated half. You know, stuff like that. Coins that don't carry a premium holdered.
I just busted out 22 different coins and between those and some loose type I've had in binders, just put together about 2/3'rds a pleasant, warm, (mostly) problem free Type Set.
I'm having a blast!

The Thread regarding the way coin collecting was growing up (for me, the late sixties, early seventies) made me stop and think. It also drove me to action, so off to the Carlsbad Coin shop and moments later there I was with a brand new Dansco coin album ready to fill those holes!

My lesson learned is to sometimes think outside of what I have- I really wasn't appreciating those various mid-grade slabbed coins and they weren't really worth selling on eBay, and make it fun. Now I'm enjoying them all over again, just in a different format!

Now, does anyone have a problem free, FN12 (or so) 20c piece?!

I just came across an old Whitman book of mine from my childhood--
Lincoln Cents 1941--- it's about half complete. Maybe I'll finish it up and give it to one of my nephews. I'll bet I'd have a good time.

Being a YN I've dealt with slabs my whole numismatic life. I agree that slabs are helpful to the hobby but sometimes I wish that I could go back to the 50's and 60's before 3rd party grading and a numerical grading system. I think it would be a welcome change. The "good old days"

I think that cracking coins out of 3rd party grading holders (even high grade or expensive ones) to put them in albums or Capital holders or whatever is a fine idea, and I also think that it is a trend that will grow over time as collectors get tired of inconsistent grading, changing standards, and all the other games that go along with it. I have broken many high grade dollars out of PCGS and NGC slabs to put into custom 3X3 Capital holders cause I think they look much better in them.

Well .to each his own.I see it differntly I guess.Even if you disagree with the insert,the plastic is for protecting the coin.Thats the main reason for slabbing in my eyes.And for authenticity of course.

Cam- Don't get me wrong. I still have a ton of stuff holdered, for the reasons you believe in.
I just did this with various coins that weren't going anywhere as they were.

i've done the same thing, and it's also fun and relatively inexpensive cracking out higher grade stuff for the contemporary issues.

We must be awful close together. Years ago I use to buy coins from Marian, Warren and Cricket at Carlsbad Coins. That was before Marian's gambling ways at the Indian Casinos lost her the stop. I live near the hospital in the east Oceanside area of Tri Cities.

I still have a Lincoln board I worked on as a kid. Some of the coins came from circulation by way of my dad's dimestore. When we moved recently, my wife came across it. I said it should go on EBay, but she wouldn't hear of it. Now it's hers. She hasn't added to it yet, but I'm hoping maybe one day she'll develop enough interest to try.

George- I heard it the same way. The new owner, Ray, is a great guy and terrific to work with. He also has a love and passion for rainbow toned coins!

I've been looking for a VF 20c myself for many months.......either they are too pricey for my meager wallet, or they are so wrn you can see no detail, or they are harchly cleaned. I like the idea of what you did.........I have a Dansco about half full myself.
