When was the last time you used eBay's BIN feature?

Periodically, I used to find some decent buy-it-now prices on eBay. For instance, I purchased an MS64FBL franklin for $20 via BIN. But lately the BIN prices all seem to be ridiculously high. I would have expected just the opposite since eBay now charges a premium for the service. What has your experience been?

  • I have yet to use the Buy It Now feature. I've only once seen something that I'd pay the Buy It Now price for, and even then, I chose not to use it because I'm pretty sure I could get it for less. (I guess I'll find out soon because it's actually a current auction.)

I've used it several times. Mostly last month. Only when I feel the BIN is a fair price for the coin. If I think it's on the high end of my expected to pay range, then I'll wait and see. And snipe!

Last week I saw a nice coin with a bin of $34 and a starting price of $29. The auction had 12 hours left so I bid the $29 then bid again at $34 so my bid was still $29 with a max of $34 hoping to get a better price. I lost and the coin sold for $39.

I purchased a 1999 PF 70 SAE for $125, resold it a month later for $190. Of course I could have cracked it out of the NGC slab, crossed it over into a 69 PCGS and sold if for $50-$75. I had noticed the seller using BIN's on all of his items, which we all priced for quick sale. The only thing I can think of was that he was trying to raise cash quickly or didn't care to know where the market was.

only ever used it once, probably a year ago, not since. i don't think it makes much sense, considering these are supposed to be auctions
  • Never used it.

I have used this a couple times to buy rare varieties at cheap prices.
One was an 1840-O large O with Drapery Seated Quarter in fine for $16.
Love to see the BIN just for this reason. People sell stuff without without having the foggiest idea of what they're selling.

As a seller I just started using buy it now on my auctions. I found if you price the item fairly or a little on the cheap side people use it. I posted a run of 10 proof silver eagles in 69 DCAM holders and 8 of them sold with the BIN. I guess it's all just a matter of price.
  • I used it a few nights ago to purchase the frosty Kennedy half Russ and others were discussing:

I saw that one a couple nights ago and thought it was impressive looking then, still do. Have you received it yet? Does it look as good in person as it does on the scan?

  • Used it yesterday to procure a "monster toned" orange Morgan. Real nice coin for the money.

As a seller I stopped using it when they started charging for it. No use paying 5¢ to use BIN when the first bid of 1¢ will deactivate it.

As a buyer I have used it only a couple of times. Most of the time the BIN is retail or higher.

As an ebay seller, I decide when to offer BIN. Ifs its a particularily nice coins and I think someone will want to grab it, I use BIN. However, it works best when you use in conjunction with a Reserve - else, it just takes one bid and the BIN is gone. A reserve keeps the BIN available for more potential buyers to take advantage of.

Now having siad that, I use to BIN myself but I agree with many of the thread comments before where BIN prices are absurd many times. BIN is great when its at market not 100-300% or more above market! IMHO......

  • Use it all the time. I usually set it at slightly higher than what I want to get out of the item. It it goes that way I get a bonus, if not, oh well. On the other hand, I've seen this abused way too much. IE: You'll see a $100 item with a starting bid of $9.99 and a BIN of $379.99. Just a moron looking for a pigeon.
  • I almost always buy printer and computer supplies with BIN.
For coins, the price has to be right. I've used is a lot in the distant past, very little lately.
As a seller, I've not used the new BIN feature to stop the first bid from killing BIN.

Last time I used it was for a PCGS 64 Lincoln commem at $95. I put it back on eBay and it went $125 in a 7 day auction. I don't usually have much interest in doing that. But, for $95 I just couldn't pass.

  • Three times in the last hour. Been about a month before that.
  • I used it two times and shot myself in the foot because both coins (a Morgan dollar and Panda coin) could have been bought from less later. image

  • The last time I used it I got a 53S Franklin in MS66 for $160. I had seen one go the previous week for $240 so I couldn't pass it up. Turned out to be a very nice piece.

I use the BIN feature sporadically as a buyer. As a seller, I have many auctions close with the BIN used, usually one or two auctions a week.

Greg- it doesn't have to go down that way. For example, let's say you've got a $100.00 retail coin. Your BIN is $85.00. Instead of setting a starting price of .01 with No Reserve, keep the No Reserve status but have your start price set higher (maybe $35.00 in the above example).
That way if someone is serious about the coin they've got time to pull the trigger.

Used bin a few days ago. Opening bid was 1025.00 it would have probably closed between 1150.00 and 1200.00. Emailed seller about adding bin. He added bin of 1200.00 and I took it. He paid for express mail insured and we were both happy.
