You could actually state in the auction an MS graded PCGS 1914-D lincoln cent and be truthful, scary. I bid $42 for it but did not beat the proxy.

The 09-s Lincoln the same seller is offering, is also graded "ms". Looks like a little snafu from pcgs. I have to admit, I don't think I've ever seen "luster" on a vg/8 coin either. Maybe with more "luster", it would have gone ms/10? image

I thought only ACG would have an insert that read that way.
    Thats crazy.

The best part is that the PCGS database agrees:

    Date, mintmark: 1914-D
    Denomination: 1C
    Variety: N/A
    Grade: MS08BN

Both the 14d and the 09sVDB look really dark to me so I can't tell what's going on, what's the deal with them? Are they just cases of really weak strikes? Is it possible for a weak strike to grade no higher than 08 or 15 and still be considered MS?

Luster? The coin may have oiled or had a coating of "Care" applied to it. It makes the coin look glossy regardless of the grade. It also can make it easier to get an attractive photograph.

As for the "MS" on VG-8 coin, I guess PCGS must have hired to some inexperienced help.

Once again, if I had a position of power at PCGS, I would be actively bidding to buy back those errors in order to correct them. How embarrassing!

PCGS just graded a 1946 Silver War Nickel. It is circulated and also has MS on the label. It is on the front page of Numismatic News. They go on in the article to say it has two errors, one the wrong planchet, and the other the wrong label. Guess PCGS is starting to get some "real" press about there problems (although this is really minor).
