I did ask for opinions.I just want to know how crazy I am.I thought the strike exceptional on this coin. While there is some minor hits on old Abe,The strike and color made up for it.Those who know about this coin, please don't tell.

    Merz,
I don't think either one of us are crazy. We should have called and demanded a recount!!image

Are those scratches on the coin or slab on the portrait? If on Abe, that's a PR-63 RD. As a basis for comparsion, I use my PR-65 RD 1940 Lincoln, which I heavily suspect is a 66 in 65 clothing ...

merz, it does have an exceptional strike, but with the hits and not seeing the reverse I would "swag" it at 64.

I know in hand that is a great coin. I can see PCGS giving it a 62 because of the hits.

  • Not being able to fully discern the marks on the coin VS the marks on the slab I would say PF63, maybe an outside shot at PF64. image

    Don,
I'd say PR40 in an ACG holder!

The areas I lookat in paticular are the bow tie, ear, and eye.The hair detail and beard detail are secondary.I even look at the sharpness of the lapel. These areas on this coin are well above normal. As most of you have pointed out, there are blemishes. My question is how much should that take away from a strike and PQ color of a coin? IMHO (3) grades are not reasonable.Just for the record PCGS came up with PR62 RED for this coin.I graded it a PR65 RED.If not for the blemishes I'd have given it a PR66 RED.

    Wow Don,

I knew the grade only because we discussed this coin for several weeks.
I appreciate you submitting the coin. I am sure that my disappointment in the grade runs a close 2nd to yours only because we were going to try and work a deal on it had it graded higher.

I am now back in search of a 1942 Proof 66 Red to finish out a proof set of this year. I think that I am probably competing against the Registry Set folks to locate one.

But if any one should spot one I would appreciate a little heads-up on its location.

Agian Don, I appreciate the try on the coin.

    -----------
