? on Splotchy Toning

I recently received an 1942D NGC MS65 FB Mercury Dime I won on eBay that I referenced in Hope this looks better in person. It has magenta colered splotchy toning (with some blue toning in a few spots) but otherwise blast-white.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some insites into this type of toning. Is it natural, or is it possibly caused by a previous attempt to dip the coin to make it so blast white and this irregular toning is becauase of that?

  • From the pics I would guess the coin is most likely original - never dipped. This type of toning can be found in roll end coins that were stored in a warm, humid space or even an album. But to reiterate - it does look origonal.

Natural. No telling how it got that way.

The toning looks very natural. You seem a little torn as to whether this toning is attractive to you or not. I think it's a nice, original coin, that you got at a good price. And... the guy says he would pay the shipping. If he did, and you have the coin, I hope you gave him some positive feedback, as it looks like he's just starting out on eBay (feedback 3).

    It could be a second toning(once dipped,and toning now)or original toning(never dipped).
Either way ,I wouldn`t think its AT.The fact its slabbed by a top service means alot to me.
If the toning seems to float on top of the coin when viewed at an angle,it may be 2nd toning, but may be hard to tell since its in plastic now.
Bottom line is though, its not AT most likely.
Bad part is ,seller quotes the super-inflated price of a PCGS to compare it with.image

    Hi Hookooekoo

Any chance that now that you have the coin you could take a better pic for us? That way we wouldn't have to go by a crummy ipix photo.

Btw, I think the coin looks nice and original, even with the blurry auction photo. Good job!

From a distance, the toning looks nice. The ding on the cheek is more noticable then the toning. Close inspection of the coin shows the splotchy toning, and I personally prefer even toning. I was just looking to see what I could learn abot how this type of toning occurs (inquizative minds want to know). I'll try to provide a hi-res scan of the coin tonight.

As for the seller, he'll get his positive feedback tonight as well. The pictures he provided were ok (didn't hide any obvious problems of the coin) and even though the coin sold for only about 1/2 its value, the shipping time was great (the auction ended on 8-1, I've got the coin in my hand 8-5, and there was a weekend between those dates).
