Ebay Question Help Please

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
As I'm new to Ebay I've had a few questions. If I was going after something at auction. Contacted seller with questions. Seller has another item of interest thats not at auction but will sell it to me also. Should I feel comfortable with that. Seller has all good feedback.

thanks in advance for any replys

Personally, I'd be reluctant if I hadn't done business with the seller before. Will the seller give you a return privilege? Do you have any doubts about the quality of the item? Remember if you aren't happy you have no recourse.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Kranky, Agreed thats why I'm thinking about asking him to put the other item up on ebay with bin than I would do it. Even thou seller seems fine I would want the recoarse.

  • i think the return issue is one of the biggest issues--the only reason he won't allow it (from a buyer's point of view) is if his material isn't up to par. But if it's fair & generous, then the only thinkg you might ae to lose is some return postage. And in this hooby, it's a small price to pay for the experiance.

Are the peices slabbed or raw? Are they cheap, expensive, or middle of the road? These are some other questions to ask.

Seller & I have talked about doing deal thru paypal. With seller stating same return policy as on ebay. Have also talked on phone and seems like good person. And I would use cc also. A while back I wouldn't think of doing this. It's a good coin good price. Would be shipped priority insured and me having tracking numbers etc. I feel this one will go fine. But wouldn't make a habit of it. Any more thoughts? Oh yea the coin I was after at auction of coarse got sniped from me.

If you want the protection eBay offers (whatever that is) you could ask the seller to list the coin with a BuyItNow price and you could purchase it that way.

If you go outside eBay, there may be no problems as well, but that is were alot of fraud takes place.

You're paying for it with credit card and and using insured shipping so I see no problem.

If his feedback is good you should be fine. If it's big bucks, save your emails. Ebay probably hates this type of deal but it is done more than you might think. If I win an auction I have no problem asking the seller if he has something else I am looking for.

Pay with Paypal and you will be ok.

*If the item is still available.

    17 Year Old Thread.

Use a CC since there are built-in protection such as chargebacks.

If you do a deal outside of eBay you may want to also buy an inexpensive item from him on ebay, it would be another way to get a confirmed name and address.

Be careful, there are a lot of people who will rip you off without a second thought, even "Coin Dealers"...

I did that with a model train seller (direct from his business outside of ebay ) no problem.

In terms of op question limit purchase to risk limit. For big purchases I recommend sight seen at shows.

Same reason that we study old coins. There is history in this nearly two decade old forum. It is good to see what was happening in the earlier days of internet coin trading.

Ebay was much simpler in 2002 (I joined in 2000.) Paypal probably had not yet been acquired and integrated (and since spun off.) Ebay had their own system (and do so once again.) Fees were much lower and it was easy to communicate with a potential trade partner.

Some things about Ebay are better now....just give me some time to think.

    2002 I was mostly a collector.

17 years later, full-time coin dealer because of eBay :)

I been in Ebay since 1999 but was not into coins back then. Lived in Vegas and chased Beanie Babies back then sell them on EBay. I guess I was a collector but not coins. Maybe the OP might see this old thread and update after all these years. :) I am curious how it turned out. Where do you get that popcorn eating animation while we wait?

As long as you pay via PayPal, you can always file a chargeback.

Only if you used a credit card to make the PP payment.

Also a paypal claim can only be won if the paypal details of the transaction specifically identify the item paid for. For this reason I always request the seller to send me a paypal invoice for items not sold to me on ebay.

I assume you're not an idiot and therefore would only use a credit card through PayPal for anyone but REAL F&F. You don't need the PayPal guarantee because you have the CC guarantee.

  • derrybderryb Posts: 37,576 ✭✭✭✭✭

Some buyers do not use a credit card when paying through paypal. Many use their paypal balance.

I consider that a mistake unless dealing with someone well known. The CC gives a layer of protection that the cash balance doesn't

It is what it is, but back to my earlier point: unless you pay by credit card with paypal you cannot do a chargeback.

that is true. And if you pay by cash at a coin show, you can't do a chargeback either. That's why never use cash. LOL.
