Dear collectors and coin enthusiasts,
one of my favourite things in our hobby is to open a true time capsule and look through a bulk of random coins wich were taken from circulation a long time ago by someone without a collector's / numismatist's perspective.
This weekend I went to a local (northern German) flea market and spent 150€ ($168) for a later 1930's cigar box filled with 1 & 2 Pfennig copper coins, most likely stashed away in the early 1940's.
Back then you had 5 types of 1 & 2 Pfennig coins circulating in Germany:
- imperial copper 1 & 2 Pfennig coins with the imperial eagle on them, minted between 1873 - 1916
- Weimar Republic copper 1 & 2 Rentenpfennig / Reichspfennig coins, minted between 1923 - 1936
- 3rd Reich copper 1 & 2 Reichspfennig with the imperial eagle holding a swastika
- 3rd Reich zinc 1 Reichspfennig coins, from 1940 onwards
- some foreign copper coins, wich by law were equal to German 1 & 2 Pfennig coins. Including 1 & 2 Pfennig from Danzig, 100 & 200 Kronen from Austria, 1 & 2 Groschen from Austria and 1 & 2 Groszy from Poland (both the brass and the bronze variety).
My lot included no zinc coins, 972 copper coins from the 3rd Reich, 687 Weimar Republic copper coins, 250 imperial copper coins and 4 foreign ones (1 & 2 Pfennig Danzig 1926, 1 Groschen Austria 1935, 2 Groschen Austria 1926).
No key date coins included, but it was still a lot of fun and definitley worth the 150€...

Yes, I always liked the post-war (WWI) German coins
That's an insane deal, worth many times what you paid for it.
Love it

Very Nice! I see some old style (small) Imperial Eagles in there. My favourite coins from that era.
Flea markets are always good places to find interesting and sometimes scarce coins with some luck, even nowadays.
I lived in Brussels in the 80's and found two very scarce German coins at flea markets there.
