However in terms of rarity - the Privy Quarter is really not that rare, compared to other "Special Strikes":

    Type Year Strike Type Mintage
    SMS Quarter 1967 SMS 1,863,344
Reverse Proof Silver 2019‑S Enhanced RP 50,000
Reverse Proof Silver 2020‑S RP 50,000
Silver Proof ATB Set 2012‑S Silver Proof 33,000 sets
Privy Quarter 2026 Special circulation 250,000

    You're right, it isn't.

t's a circulating coin where the survival rate will presumably be very high even in close to "as struck" quality, and the absolute number won't be low either. Likely several million (at least) will be actively looking for it, and still 00s of 000s if it's not widely publisized.

The one $2600 eBay sale I saw this week is more than recent sales of choice MS (63ish) Liberty Seated quarters.

Final thoughts on the privy quarter: Its a good thing for the hobby, because it will create a treasure hunt phenomenon. I too think that its an 'artificial rarity', which is no accident like an error, or the Cheerios dollar. Nonetheless, if it gets a kid into collecting coins, its a good thing.

Although, I'm sure there are mint employees throughout the country that have zero interest in coins or don't collect coins........hello eBay! 😂

I have no problem with the Mint giving its employees a couple each of the quarters out of the 250K as that will ensure a lot of uncirculated coins are made available when the employees see them on EBay, which some already have.

Agreed. So that's about 1,600 mint employees nationwide. Two coins each, that about 3,200 coins.

@jmlanzaf You are right if its considered a business strike, which it ought to be. How will PCGS treat it? what mint? According to PCGS it is a MS -Business Strike if it:

1 Struck on normal business‑strike dies
2 Struck with normal business‑strike finish
    3 Intended for circulation
    Distributed through circulation channels

So I stand corrected. The only fair comparison is the W-mint quarters which were minted during the National Park years. Those were all 2-million per coin design.

    Year Design Mintage
2019 Lowell National Historical Park 2,000,000
    2019 American Memorial Park 2,000,000
2019 War in the Pacific 2,000,000
    2019 San Antonio Missions 2,000,000
2019 Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness 2,000,000

They are uncirculated business strikes, so PCGS will just make it a variety. I expect that it will get a separate line as it could not be a + marked item under P, D, or S since the mint is unknown and it is not an SP.

Clears up part of the mystery regarding where quantity is coming from. And now, whoever buys them from them gets to allow them to monetize the 50 cent bonus Hollis gave them.

Will the employees who sell have to pay taxes on the profit?😆

Would of been nice if the mint awarded a 1964 peace dollar to each employee after the striking of same.😀

Since this is a game that the US Mint set up. I expect roll hunters to buy out all the new quarters at the banks. Since someone is still paying upward of a 100% premium on eBay, you probably wont see any of the Declaration of Independence quarters in pocket change for a while. The Mint plans on minting billions of them (quarters nickels and dimes) because they know people will hoard them.

Interesting you say that. I haven't been able to get a quarter in change for 3 days now up here in The Commonwealth. Strange daze. THKS!

I really want one of these but I refuse to pay anything more than $500.
So odds are that I will not have one unless I get lucky.

Keep your eyes on Ebay during the next week and be patient but be careful too. Prices are dropping significantly on these but it's definitely buyer beware!

Eventually there will be a low but it will level off and start to creep back up over the summer to the next level.

Your best shot at below $500 is sooner rather than later as more are found and listed on Ebay by newbies pricing below market value. Good luck!

Thats the 5 coin silver qtr set. Not 5 coin ATB 5 oz. Also included in the regular silver proof set of the same year-and-also in the limited edition silver proof set of the same year.

Your post is very misleading and incorrect. 395,000+ silver proof sets that year, 44,000 +limted edition proof sets, plus any in the format of 5 coin silver proof quarters. Well over 440,000 sets.

    AI is not your friend.

I wonder how many completed auctions actually get "paid" with prices dropping so fast.
Additionally, how many get sent back as the old SND, and ebay (as always) sides with the buyer and issues refunds.

Everyone and their brother is out there selling these on ebay. Can you blame them? Easy money for them.
With a crowd like this - definitely non collectors - they are going to challenge each other to a race to the bottom. Each one lowering and lowering their price. They have nothing in it but a quarter.
Sit tight and watch this mess unfold.

2012 was a key date for silver proof sets. But that number 33,000 does not make sense. That is the number of silver QUARTER proof sets.
Final mintage: 393,757 silver proof sets. In 2012 the US Mint also released the Limited Edition Silver Proof Set, which included the silver proof set plus the limited edition proof ASE.
This is the standard annual silver proof set, containing all denominations in 90% silver.

    • 2018 had the lowest single‑year regular silver proof set mintage (242k).
    • 2012 had a higher regular set mintage (393k), but when you add the Limited Edition set (50k), the combined total is 443k.

    Takeaway

    • Lowest regular silver proof set mintage: 2018 (242k)
    • Lowest combined silver proof production year (regular + limited): 2012 (443k)
    • Lowest ATB silver quarter silver proof set: 2012 (33k) (seperate product line)

Sorry for the AI brain dump. This has gone too far off topic already! I edited it down a bit.
