Seated dollar--where would you send for grading and what would they grade?

logger7logger7 Posts: 9,562 ✭✭✭✭✭

This coin looks like a nice XF or possibly an AU to me, maybe I'm being too optimistic.

Where would you send it if your objective was maximum marketability?

I'm thinking that cacg could go choice XF on this coin. PCGS about the same or even go AU50; NGC may be more likely to go 50.

It looks like a 40 to me.

I think your grades are quite optimistic. I could see it as a 35 or 40, and I don't think it will straight-grade at CACG. It might not at PCGS either.

Probably VF25, LIBERTY is a little weak and there's some wear on Liberty as well as the eagle's feathers
(thank you for a chance to use my new book  )

If your book shows you a VF25 that has that much detail, I’d like to see pictures, please.

Is the obverse weakly struck? The obverse detail seems subdued compared to the rev.

VF perhaps on a good day maybe XF if it straight grades. Pictures are at an angle which makes it very difficult to grade.

it could just be the photo quality but some parts just look worn
maybe i did lowball it a little, it could possibly be a 30 or 35, but I'm no grader!

VF imo, maybe it could squeak into a 40 but I can’t get there on this one.

For objectivity I'd compare to PCGS photograde: https://www.pcgs.com/photograde#/SeatedDol/Grades

The coin is an XF, it has the detail and the typical look if you compare with others. For example a lot of the PCGS certified XF coins have a lifeless "wiped out" look. It looks like PCGS is now taking around 40 business days for regular.

  • tradedollarnuttradedollarnut Posts: 20,596 ✭✭✭✭✭

Nahhhhhh. Obverse isn’t anywhere close to XF and the old cleaning might knock it down from 35

  • logger7logger7 Posts: 9,562 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm not seeing VF surfaces, lots of originality with the coin, hits commensurate with an EF. Every vf that I've seen has totally worn surfaces and wiped out luster, this coin does have luster and originality.

Sending this in for grading will simply not produce a good outcome… grade wise or financially. This coin would be better served to reside in the type set album of your choice. Further and perhaps what is often overlooked is how challenging it is to find those original Seated Dollars in an unmolested state of preservation.

The wear is into LIBERTY and also into the thighs, breasts and foot.

Don't think that you can get to an XF.
