GRADE POSTED - 1950 Franklin half-dollar proof, just back from ANACS

Super difficult for me to pic due to scant hairlines that are reflected by the slab, then reflected again by the mirrors. At any rate, I got two things wrong on my non-certified grade. I bought this at the Tallahassee Two Day Coin Show last year only to decide later that it would not upgrade my run of modern proofs, 1936 - 1969. Thus it now sits in inventory :D .

PR64 non-cameo. It's sort of hard to figure out if those are hairlines or on the slab, I assume they are hairlines since the slab is new.

    Unfortunate mishandling on that one.

Guessing the grade is fun but I wonder why your choice of TPG is ANACS??

It's good to know that proof coins can have lots of hairlines and still straight grade. It seems to fit the PR61 grading standard.

Proof 61, cameo. A coin I would not buy.

    I think PF62
The striking of the corners of the bell are a bit weak so I wouldn’t expect CAM

A 1950 Cameo Proof Franklin half dollar is one of my favorite coins.

The pictured coin looks like it has a very large number of hairlines on both the obverse and reverse of the coin. I do not know how ANACS would view the coin (does it Warrant a Cameo designation or not?); however I think that the numerical grade of the coin (if what appear to be hairlines are on the coin and not merely scratches on the holder) would not be higher than a PF62.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    ANACS SAYS: PF-62 CAM

This was interesting because I personally graded it PR-63 but not CAM - my grade was a point higher but my designation lower, so I guess this one's a wash? The photos severely overemphasize the actual amount of hairlines but they are visible in brief patches on both sides. That said, as at least one other respondent mentioned, the lapel and a small area beneath the ear seemed insufficiently frosty to permit a cameo designation. Overall though, I believe it will sell quickly because this always seems like a very popular coin with collectors.

I think all of the 1950s look really nice in CAM or DCAM...especially the Lincolns.
