New Purchase: 1886 PCGS PR66 CAC (Green) Seated Half

OneyOney Posts: 1,421 ✭✭✭✭✭

I got a call from a local seller about a large lot of proof coins. I purchased 3, this one is the proof seated half. I am posting the Heritage pics of the coin since is was in one of their auctions a bit back. What do you think? Opinions welcome.

Those pics won't show hairlines that might be present. Otherwise, it sure looks nice!

It looks very nice but HA glamour shots leave quite a bit to be desired.

HA probably doing that coin no good. I suspect tilted properly, it is a beauty. As Catbert points out, hairlines are critical for grades of such proofs and these images won't show them.

I will wait to see what it looks like under a bright light, and not Heritages edited images.

Hairlines on a 66 CAC should be extremely minimal. The HA photos are not good. I'm sure the coin looks much better in-hand.

While everyone’s comments about hairlines on proof coins is true, including they typically don’t show up in photos of proof coins, I would think CHANCES are, you’re ok, since BOTH PCGS AND CAC take the quantity of hairlines into account in determining if the coin is solid as a PR66 before applying their grade and their sticker. Sure, they err at times, but as noted, in my opinion, chances are they both did not.
