Just curious. I am not good when it comes to toning.
I dont know enough about it.
Looks like album toning but what do I know.

Ill go with album toning but that reverse is a bit harsh to me 🤢
@johnny9434 when you say "harsh" what do you mean?

The toning on both obverse and reverse strike me as too heavy to be simple album toning. No one can know things like this for sure but it is pretty clear the obverse was in an enviroment where the edges were allowed to turn black; near terminal? The reverse has more even but heavy toning too. I don't think it matters much what it was stored in. The coin spent a long time exposed to harsh chemicals, bad air, whatever. Just my opinion. james
Think MA. Agree think that reverse toning occurred before being stored in an album.
This is just a coin I have in my cigar box. I looked at it this morning while moving things around. Its not a recent purchase or anything like that. In fact im going to sell it. I just like to be honest.

Seems to be to much crud on the reverse for me
Looks NT to me, neat coin.
Looks like it was dipped and retoned. Either due to an album or an improper rinse.

It's fine. Neat coin.
I think it has natural toning. The obverse the usual coat of tarnish. The reverse was the result of back down storage with a great deal of sulfur in the material with which it came in contact. It’s gone a bit too dark to call it attractive.
I find this coin attractive in hand. The images kind of dull it down.
To me it has that original crust on the obverse.
The reverse has a nice reflection. It comes to life when you wheel it.
I do appreciate everybodys opinion.

That explains the toning. The cigar box gives off gases which reacted with the coin. I would not call it artificial but some could make a case for it. The toning is darker (on the border of too dark), especially on the obverse so a grading company might consider it environmental damage.
If selling it and you want to disclose more info, I would write something like: "toned; likely from storage in cigar box; no guarantee that a TPG would straight grade"

Its been in the cigar box for less than a year. I bought it toned. Its been inside a closed case the entire time. No air is getting in or out. So the cigar box has nothing to do with it.

It is possible someone else stored it that way because the toning reminds me of coins stored in cigar boxes or leather pouches for an extended period of time.
Cleaned and retoned.
I have to agree with @U1chicago . Maybe History is repeating itself because that coin looks very similar to some coins my grandfather had in an old cigar box. James
Old album toning where the backing sheet was not inert. The early Whitman tri-fold albums introduced in 1940 had glue on the entire backing sheet, even in the holes, so that the coin rested on dried glue. Judging from the grade this coin could have been albumed in the early 1940’s.
Eventually Whitman figured out that if they applied the glue to the back of the punched-out board there would not be glue where the hole was.
There were other albums that caused heavy reverse toning. The rectangular (horizontal format) green ones with plastic slides over the fronts sometimes left silver coins looking like this.

oters may be in a situation similar to yours but miss this thread because there isn't a question, just the word answered
Okay I put it back.
@CaptHenway I like your explanation of this toning. As I said this coin is really nice in hand. The reverse has more "flash" than the obverse. To me it looks totally original.
