Capped bust half dollar with both reeded and lettered edge?

I have a small collection of capped bust half dollars that I recently dusted off and as I was looking at them I noticed that a 1835 coin had both a reeded edge as well as a lettered edge on the same coin. The letters state "fifty cents or half a dollar *" It appears that there was an effort made to not have reeds where the words are. I know the reeded version of this series came out a year latter in 1836. Has anyone ever seen a reeded edge on a 1835 capped bust half dollar or heard of one with both a reeded edge and a lettered edge? Attached are some photos. Thanks for looking

Hello, I had to dig into the books but the Bust Half Fever for year 1831 states:

"Changes In Design: Yes, minor experimentation continued with the edges. Most specimens show vertical lines (somewhat lightly impressed) between the words, "FIFTY CENTS OR A HALF DOLLAR". The vertical line style was accepted and continued through the end of the series."

    Also Overton for 1831 has:
"The experimental edge dies used in 1830 continued in 1831. The light vertical reeding or grooving appears with regularity throughout the year."

  • Thank you for the information. Very interesting. It makes sense they would do some experimenting before making a future change.
