You can almost hear the collectors from the 1800's b*tching and moaning about flip opportunities and mintages.

    Beautiful quarter!

Great stuff, Don! I love 19th century proofs. I think your half is my favorite so far.

I have only one proof Seated coin:

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

Great set, @ajaan ! FYI, PCGS has a 7 coin Registry Set for you. As of now, 336 collectors are participating (including me).

For the rest of those reading this, this basic 7 coin set allows Proof and/or Business Strike coins.

    Here’s a hotlink:

    https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/type-sets/design-type-sets/basic-seated-liberty-type-set-1837-1891/6354

As you can see, it’s called BASIC SEATED LIBERTY TYPE SET (1837-1891).

Thanks for all the comments. I wanted nicely toned coins for the set. The other three coins are going to be challenging in the look and grade, PR61-3, I'm looking for.

There was a time after the Civil War when the mint often did a sloppy job when it made Proof coins. I thought that most of that was during the early 1870s, but it seems that there may have been more instances of that. This 1870 Proof half dime was not among my better purchases. NGC called it a PR-66.

Here are some of the other denominations as Proofs.

    Twenty Cent Piece

    Half Dollar

    Seated Dollar

@1946Hamm . Is there a significance to 1877? I know the Country and the economy was in a funk but I'm not familiar with what and how many were struck. james

From my research, the mint decided early in the year that no more minor coins were needed for circulation. The mint made cents for circulation in January and made nothing but Proof cents after that. The Nickel Three Cent Piece and the nickel were only issued as Proofs in 1877.

Nice group. 19th century proofs are some of my favorite coins, especially if originally toned.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.
