The 1855 Type 2 was bought as an MS63, and then upgraded with the plus via Reconsideration.

There are 5 different denominations for the SF Mint in its initial year of operation, 1854. The $2.5 & $5 are pretty much impossible to obtain. But the $1, $10 & $20 are available in fairly limited numbers. Essentially, I have the “complete” 1854 “S” set.

Type 2:

Not the prettiest girl in the show, but the color is real for a 1855-C & the strike is sharp for this tough date.

Type 3:

Gold $1 collectors know the 1861-D was struck under the Confederacy. I’ll have this very coveted rarity @ FUN - I’m going to attempt to get it in a straight graded holder (“mint error”; s/b AU 53 or 55). If successful, the value of this coin will greatly increase.

for some reason, these always seem to be readily available in AU58. This one has some planchet roughness.

The 1854-S gold dollar in an important first year issue for the West Coast
On April 29 703 coins were delivered to the Paying Clerk from the Coiner
1 coin was selected and sent back East to the Director
May 11 1,729 coins were delivered
August 18 4,200 coins were delivered there was a depositor demand for them

September 30 the final 8,000 for the year were delivered to the paying clerk
Total mintage 14,632

Here is the rarest gold dollar in my collection, an 1855-D. The mintage is 1,811 with probably less than 100 survivors.

And here is my only Proof.

This 1880 gold dollar looks P-L, but it's not marked as such.

Easily overlooked fact: there were only 2 issues of the 1861 G$1 - this one from Philadelphia & the 1861-D minted only under the Confederacy.
