1856 FEC opinions

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,270 ✭✭✭✭✭

I am considering this 1856 FEC for my type set. It's a coin on my bucket list. What would you grade it? I don't believe there is a big spread on prices in the lower grade range but I am seeking opinions from our experts here on the quality and eye appeal for this year. Thanks to experienced Copper guys for any insights! I will post the grade tomorrow night. It's in an old green holder. These are the owners pics.

    Picture perfect VF35 NGC 40
It’s the look people want in that range. Buy in range of auction results which should be pretty tight in that range and you’ll be fine even if you don’t hold it for too long

My WAG is VF30. A nice looking cent and one I dreamed of owning when I was a kid.

That looks like a 40 to me.

The 1856 FE is one of just 6 cents I have yet to photograph. I'd love to cross paths with one like this some day.

Not sure you could get any more original color for a VF coin. If affordable, grab it.

Very nice uniform surfaces and quite an attractive VF35 IMO.

Looks solid; I’ll go against consensus on the conservative side @ VF30.

Maybe the greater point about this coin is that it’s a Snow-3, and not a later made re-strike for collectors. I hate re-strikes, especially ones made years later with a novelty date stamped on them. This coin was purpose made, spent, circulated, set aside, and saved for generations. This is the kind of coin you buy. I think you should go for it.

Thank you for the history lesson. I did not know the story behind the S-3 attribution.

Congrats on picking up a very nice coin. At VF25, I'm surprised there isn't a bean on it. From the comments here, maybe it should be wearing gold.

My grade was VF-30. I bought one in PR-64 at Winter FUN. The pieces graded Mint State now sell for a lot more.

How do you know that it has been to CAC? Not everything has been submitted. If CAC rejected it, I don’t know why.

I have no idea of if it has been to CAC or not. I have never sent any of my coins there and have never looked at the pop reports. But this coin looks very nice and PQ for the posted grade, therefore my comment about the bean. Just my opinion based on the images, posted grade and everyone's high grade guesses. I to had guessed VF30 though I had thought about 25 being a possibility. But even a nice PQ 25 or low end 30 in a 25 holder should pick up a green bean, right? This is a coin that I would love to own and looks nice for the grade. Just my opinion, thus my comment.

Wow! In a 2013 coin number holder too! You can use that coin to complete the VERY DIFFICULT to complete Mint State set of Flying Eagles! Congrats!

Is there any chance it is circulated proof? The design looks so crisp and well defined for a business vf25

My guess is that CAC wouldn’t award a gold sticker unless they felt the coin was XF, so a green sticker would likely be the best realistic outcome.
