I've thought recently that if the earliest dies of 1816 cent coinage could be identified, we might have a variety or two that we can label as issued in 1815.

Empty Nest Collection
After finishing a date set of cents from 1793 to 2025, I went after an 1815 quarter. That finished a date set of U.S. coins from all the years the mint system was in operation from 1792 to 2025.
This piece is overgraded in an EF-45 holder, but I know my luck in auctions. A properly graded piece would have left me totally buried. With this piece, the burial is minimal. There is protected luster inside the letters, but the coin is still not sharp enough for the EF-45 grade. It's a VF-35 at best, probably VF-30.
For whatever reason, the Planters Bank in New Orleans asked the mint to provide quarters instead of the usual request for half dollars from its deposit of silver. The mint had not issued any quarters since 1807, but decided to grant the request, thus reviving the denomination.
