Are you raiding your albums, yet, to sell the silver (or gold) for the current prices?

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,597 ✭✭✭✭✭

Even some of the BU Franklins/Kennedys//Washingtons/Roosevelts aren't worth much more than current melt, right? Much less the circ ones.
So, that Dansco you have sitting in your bookshelf that is full of 90% modern silver coins...yeah, that one. Have you raided it yet? Plan to?
If they are circ, is it more tempting to you?
Have you thought how much value is in there now?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

No. I began buying silver from a reputable mint (IRA qualifying) in 2004 at $8-9 per ounce. Now I'm selling the bulk from around that time and putting half into stocks, half as cash. With four years remaining until retirement I think I timed this quite well. As for gold, not much aside from several 1/4 eagles and commemoratives. Never could afford much on a working man's income having priorities and responsibilities.

Already started. Plan on selling it all over the next couple of months unless things crash.

I've taken all the proceeds, by the way, and put them into a high dividend value stock mutual fund at Vanguard. It's time to let the money collect returns instead of dust.

No reason to sell yet. I get far more enjoyment out of the hobby and looking at the coins then I would from another few shares of some ETF. Walkers are 100 years old now. Cool to play with raw ones that circulated. I do wonder how much 90% will be seen at coin shows in 15-20 years after so many are being destroyed today.

If you have a good alternative investment then this is a great time to be dumping all of your common silver and gold coins. The recent increase in gold and silver prices far outpaces any increase in inflation in the US and is caused by fear. How long will the fear last? What happens to gold and silver prices if fear subsides?

Don't miss this opportunity to cash out of common material. Concentrate on truly rare coins that are actually worth saving.

I have two side sets of complete Franklin albums, all mostly AU-ish hand picked from 90% dealer bins over the years.
I think I will take them in and cash em'.
I have a primary BU album set complete with proofs that I put together over a bunch of years that I still really enjoy.
I completed a circ Walker set, again mostly from 90% pick outs. For years I carried a folded piece of paper with the dates I still needed to find. I ended up having to purchase 3 of the keys for real prices. I still really like that set and will keep it as is for now.

Found this interesting today. Asked Google AI how to determine bullion value of 1970 10G Nederland Coins and this is what
it chose to explain. I may hold off on selling my mercs, washie and walker albums if this is AI's prediction of silver/oz price. lol

I have been saying for years that I would sell my 90% folders and junk silver if silver ever got back to $50. I remember the Hunt brothers manipulating the market and it crashing. Things seem different now with global instability and the dollar dominance in question. May let go of some at FUN.

The short answer is no. Considering that there are reports of refineries shut down and dealers paying 25% + back of spot this doesn't seen like a very good time to be selling unless you have connections. Now for dealers and those so connected who can receive closer to a normal sell/spot split then it could be a very good time to sell. I however think both silver and gold have room to run still and while I'm not trying to time the market or anything I am not looking to sell bullion right now.

And put Capital Gains taxes on top of that and it does not end up being as much as it appears to be.

I've sold off some sterling silver jewelry making material to someone else who is still making jewelry.
The last of it was 1200 grams worth at the time about $1600, but the same person has been buying all my scrap silver for years so I haven't been raising my sell price.
I have a lot of random 90%, IF I were to answer Yes, :o would I still be a collector :D
I'm More of a vintage silver/gold collector anyway.
I am considering thinning out the hoard.

The run on gold and silver hasn’t tempted me. My coin collection means more to me than the financial gains I could acquire.

Maybe maybe not. With the flood of folks selling all their alloy silver, small B&Ms need to be careful if the wholesalers/refiners only want .999. Silver jumped 25% in 1 month. If the dealer has to sit with it until the refiner spigot opens again for 90%, they could lose big time. I'd rather them tell me sorry can't offload to the refiners near spot and I might be better to wait unless cash is needed urgently. Now if they are offering 25% back on .999, then they are ripping folks off.

In Tucson in January I might trade some more coins that have become bullion for more valuable collector coins.
In OKC this summer I sold a bunch of stuff I’ve had for a long time and went across the aisle and bought a 42/1 Merc for about $50 less than I’d just been paid. There was no way I could have gotten the Merc for the amount I paid for what I had just sold, so I considered it a tremendous deal on my part. I enjoyed the batch of coins while I owned them and swapped them out for a coin I’ll enjoy for a long long time to come.
None of the coins I sold were bought as bullion, but much of it had lost its collector value to current spot price.

Ah, but if you had the modern, common, 90% and sold, you could buy more "vintage" without digging into the wallet more, right? ;)

No albums, but I’m taking this time to clean up my modern good and silver. I’ve given up trying to stay current with the mint. Coins made for circulation only will remain in my 21st century type set. Also selling 20th century bullion.

No not at the moment, but it's something to eventually start thinking about. My dansco's hold my numismatic valued coins. The melt circulated stuff (Mercs, Walkers, Franklin's, Roosie and Washington Quarters) are in the Whitman blue folders. Dansco's are to expensive to hold the junk. 😉 🤣

I was always caught between melt/scrap value and numismatic value. One man's melt value is another man's numismatic value.

Disclaimer: I'm not a dealer, trader, grader, investor or professional numismatist. I'm just a hobbyist. (To protect me but mostly you! 🤣 )

The low grade stuff in my whitman folders will be getting sold. The BU stuff in my dansco albums, no. I enjoy it too much. Ill be keeping the Walker set I made as well as the better two Mercury sets I made from junk piles! I cant make up my mind on when I would pull the trigger on my silver bullion collections. I enjoy them but would be easy to rebuild!

    Yes.

My dilemma is 4 2006 Reverse Proof 20th Anniversary AGEs; 3 in PCGS PR70 First Strike Holders. With gold at $800 an ounce they were worth $4,000. With gold at $4,000+ I think I worry I will only be able to get near spot.

I have a bunch of ATB 5oz rounds that I should sell.

And I have 8 1859 gold coins in my #2 ranked 1859 with gold registry set. It may be time to sell!

I’m not raiding the coins in my albums, but I did take a bunch of certified coins to Great Collections to auction off, including a bunch of modern mint products made of gold and silver that I bought from the mint over time and got slabbed by PCGS. The run up in price of gold and silver helped me decide to do this now. I still like and enjoy my albums and the coins in them, but I don’t really enjoy or value modern mint products very much because they are all the same, 69s and 70s always readily available in mass quantities become more boring to me every year. I like their designs and all that, but mass produced perfection makes them into a commodity. But the coins in my albums, I like them much more, I enjoy trying to make them match each other in appearance all at plus or minus one grade so that the common dates and mintmarks match the key dates. But I did sell off a bunch of loose duplicates of circulated 90% that I had raw and not in albums a little while back and used the proceeds to buy slabbed circulated coins for my Circulated Type Registry sets.

$50+/oz silver definitely has me thinking about going through the loose coins part of my "accumulation" but the Whitman folder of Roosie Dimes was from my brother and has a bit of sentimental value and the remnants of the Morgan Dollar collection holds a little bit of sentiment as well... the Walkers and Franklin's are leftovers from my time as "The Tooth Fairy"... lol...

I guess I'll be figuring out the cost of sentiment!!

I have no US albums to raid, but I am dumping whatever I have of miscellaneous world silver coinage, all smaller than crown sized. I've bought a few world silver crowns lately which I consider a more liquid replacement.

I have multiple albums full of silver coins. I'd be happy to sell them but at the moment no one I know is buying silver. Not the LCS or my favorite pawn shops. The big guys have all they can handle and aren't going to tie up more money in stuff they can't move. So, for now, not raiding my sets.

  • vprvpr Posts: 628 ✭✭✭

No, but only because I'm lazy. I even have a bunch of 999 "scrap" gold but it's a lot of work unless I want to sell it for way below melt. I'll just keep it as an "emergency fund" for now.

I'm picking up some things now that premiums have come down. I just bought a 2008-W Proof Platinum Eagle 4 coin set for a decent price. I've been wanting one for a while.

My low-grade Washington quarter collection from my youth is in rolls ready to be turned in for cash. There is very little if any numismatic value in the entire set. I plan on selling it to the local coin shop for no premium over silver so they can fill their junk boxes.

I understand the sentiment part. I pulled an album with circulated Washington’s out of my grandparents’ house after my grandma died a few months ago. I’m pretty sure those won’t be getting sold, maybe ever. We’ll see.
