Llamas and alpacas are camels. They aren't like camels, or related. They are camels. When was anyone going to tell me this?! How long had Bill Nye been holding out on us?
It might not look like much, but this 1798 BB-102 bust dollar is singularly rare. It is the lone example of the prime Die State I. The obverse, also paired for BB-103 and BB-107, otherwise always comes with a small football break above the date. The absence of that confirms that the BB-102 was the first pairing of that obverse die. The BB-102 usually also comes with a characteristic cud at the bottom of the reverse, often mistaken as post-mint damage upon a cursory glance. AFAIK, there is not another example extant of this rare initial die state. The reverse die was inherited from the knob 9 BB-95 and is easily confirmed by the late state (for BB-95) die crack through the I of AMERICA. The three pairings of this obverse are quickly discriminated by the alignment of the last stars on the reverse: last star up out of alignment for BB-107, aligned for BB-102, and down out of alignment for the ultrarare in all grades BB-103.
Here is pair! POP 1 for variety ! Both were Cherrypicks. The1918 I picked up in un-attributed holder and is POP 1/0. The half dollar got attributed after I posted here years ago and a board member pointed it it was an MPD, and is currently 1/2.
Here is another one by virtue of the plus grade, 58+. Purchased it as NGC 62 for the color. Talk about a wonderful downgrade lol.
There was a period where I had four POP 1's in my type set and I had considered making it a theme of the set. With passage of time, two of the four ceased to be POP 1, and along with it, the plans to make it a theme of my set. The 13-D was another cherrypick from an unattributed holder, again tipped off by a fellow board member, and stayed POP 1 until recently. The 1854 w/arrows is no longer mine, and was subsequently featured in a PCGS Rare Coin Market article discussing the + grades.
The only one NGC has certified, so technically it’s a pop 1. Even though it’s a low grade it’s still a very rare variety.

Only SC-5a Wilbur token graded by our hosts. XF 40

Pop 1/0. Only specimen straight graded by PCGS. XF 40

This is pop only at PCGS
Great thread. Just curious: Does “Pop 1” mean the best coin among ALL the grading services, or the best coin at a SINGLE grading service?
