Hello Everyone... I completed a Dansco 7070 album (without gold) a few years ago...

https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1089350/my-completed-dansco-7070-type-set#latest

After looking at Type Coins for so long (25 years?) it was nice to get back into one series, early copper (Middle Date LC's),and "specialize" for a little while. I expanded to Late Dates and then found the Wayte Raymond albums for Large Cents (100 coins total) and started filling the album. This is a continual work in progress since the album has spaces for a '93 Chain Cent... '93 Liberty Cap... 1799... 1804... etc... that I knew going in that I'd never be able to complete the set. Along the way, I also re-discovered Buffalo Nickels, I completed that set and started working on a "Box of 20".

This brings me to... I've reached a point where I've decided to have some of my 7070 Type Set coins re-certified. I was a little nervous cracking a few of them... Seated Dollars, Trade Dollar, and a few others... and I like the authentication that certified coins carry. That said... I'll likely not get every coin in this set re-certified. It's just not worth the expense for every piece and I'm not a "Registry Set" kind of guy. So, what do you do with the remaining coins? Sell? Keep the unfinished set? Fill it in with "details" coins (cheaply?). I'll likely keep the top 25 or so coins (another "Box of 20"?...lol) and sell the rest, but I'm interested in what others have done...

Here's the first coin I pulled out of the Dansco album and sent in to our hosts:

Have you thought about offering them here on the BST forum? I’m sure there are lots of collectors who would appreciate the raw coins (e.g. to complete their 7070). Plus, if you still have the labels for the coins you cracked out, I’m sure that would be appreciated, too.

All tough choices! I'm an album (7070) guy, so I cringe when you say you're breaking up the old band and resubmitting them. I've broken slabs out to fill the 7070. You're now going the opposite direction. Like @steve_richardson said, there could be others here looking to start a type set "with' the 7070 album.

I would sell and use the proceeds to get a coin I always wanted but never thought I could get.

I've done that a few times and it's a thrilling and satisfying experience.

I don't do 7070s but for my Peace $ album, when i bought a slabbed example, I left it in the slab and put another peace $ in the hole with the reverse showing. Hole was filled and I knew I had a slabbed example of that date/mint. This would not work for some of the 7070 holes.

I think the 7070 albums only cover general types. The less common minor types are no included. My collection is almost "whole hog" although there are few minor types I will not get. For example, if you are really interested, you could have three 1794 half cent types. The design changed in a minor way during the year. I only have a 1794 and a 1795 half cent. Most people consider these coins to be the same type, Liberty Cap facing Right, but as you can see, they are different.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I never did the 7070 in a physical album, just virtual in the Registry across the street. It’s all circulated. I need to update my virtual coin album image to capture a few upgrades, but I just won an award again across the street for my circulated 7070 without gold Registry set. Here’s my certificate
I plan on continuing to work on it with potential upgrades if I ever find any with even better eye appeal and selling off the duplicates at Great Collections.

Lots of choices for sure, I built my 7070 with a lot of impaired or AT coins (that I removed the tone from) as I wasn't looking to spend a lot on putting raw coins into the album. As you have already begun the process of recertifying some of the coins, in your situation I would sell off the coins that I don't intend to send for grading and use the funds for something I really want. For myself that might not necessarily be another coin.

I spent 10+ years curating my Dansco 7070 album….lots of coins were cracked out of TPG holders to go in there. I love coins much more than I love plastic.

But all of that idealism was shattered when I watched my then 7 year old daughter slide damage the hell out of a 1909 S VDB Lincoln that I’d cracked out of a 62 holder around 2015. Just horrific parenting in every way by me as my kids were/are always welcome to look at our collections and ask questions…… but no lesson had been given about not touching the slides….and certainly none about not sliding the slides.

My coins were off to PCGS the next weekend.

We’ve started another Dansco album, but this time it’s not for UNC key dates

BTW I’m down to the very last couple of coins needed to “complete” my 7070 now. Been thinking a lot about my next endeavor and I’ve landed on foreign coins that circulated in Early America, likely emphasizing Pillars. So much to learn in this area which makes me really excited to head down that road when the time comes.

A British Crown type set starting with Cromwell- not as easy as it sounds.

I started slabbing my better 7070 coins, mainly for posterity, a couple years ago. Most of the set was acquired raw, and pre-2000. Several were cracked from old ANACS holders and actually upgraded at PCGS. The inexpensive ones, and likely genny grade coins, I’m keeping in the album. No one but me ever sees it anyway lol!
