Sadly, population reports have become even more worthless. Mr. Bowers and others in the past gave us decent estimates of surviving numbers, starting with the aftermath of the Pittman Act, and updating their thoughts each time there was a major melting surge. For historic silver, maybe 10% remain that haven’t gotten lost due to a hole in someone’s pocket or converted into Tesla batteries and other electronic equipment since 1964.
But collecting of “moderns” soldiers on, now looking for rarity through the gimmick coins, the “bullion” coins, and the encapsulated “hand-signed” labels by various dignitaries or popular social media characters. If you want to dig for low population “rarity” you can certainly find it. There are still things to lust after and chase.
This just completes the transition from the old farts to the next generation. It is still a fun hobby, just that the parameters have shifted.
