Attached are 4 pictures of a 1978 dime that has the obverse completely muted. Given the clarity of the front, I believe this to be a mint error. I am interested in other opinions as to what this might be and the next steps in determining the value if it is. The weight of the coin is 2.29 grams.

  • Not underweight. I'm thinking damage, possibly chemical, to the reverse.

    Welcome to the forum

    Struck through die cap.
Acid would have eaten away the rims and been lighter.
Also this is the forum for banknotes, not coins.
Perhaps a mod can move it.

  • Sorry for the location of the post. It's my first time here. Hopefully a moderator can move it.

If you notice on the front, there is also some off "centerness" to the coin. Chemical damage to back would not explain this. Please keep the comments coming.

The off “centerness” is to due to a slightly off center die but still within spec.

I don't like the way the edge shows metal rolled up over the reeding.

In any case, if you post this photo/question in the US Coins Forum you'll get more responses.

Errors are not my thing, so.....
I did a sort at error-ref.com and here it is for die cap.

    https://www.error-ref.com/?s=die+cap

What I will note is that it states the die cap is usually on the anvil die and if I got this correct, that would be the obverse die for this dime. There is one for the reverse die cap Reverse Die Cap (Anvil Die Cap in most years) (as stated) but it notes these are normally struck out of collar (normally but maybe not always?).

So the OP coin has reeding seen in the first picture (in collar) and the missing details on the reverse.

Again I don't know errors but is it all adding up or not?

There are also a couple of others (not is link sort) for struck through (detached) clad layer and two planchets at once and the intentional heavy grease. But...??

I'm guessing it's struck through a detached clad layer. That scenario would allow a muted reverse design to show through.
