Pursuit's ANA WFOM 2025 Show Report --- WARNING: You know I can ramble! --- 3 parts complete

Fun in OKC! YeeHaw!!
.
Hopefully one more show report isn't one too many ... there have been some really good ones I read this morning while trying to recenter in my own time zone and fully caffeinate!
.
Tuesday
One thing about living on the edge of the Earth is that the two major airports are not especially close. So at 2:30am on Tuesday I dragged myself out of bed, drank some coffee and had a light breakfast ... grabbed my bags and hit the road.
My flight from Seattle was scheduled to go at 8:11am, and so I wanted to be at the airport by 6ish to be safe. Despite how early this seems (and it is!), this is still probably the best time to make that drive. I hit almost no traffic all the way in. Not many folks are quite as dedicated to o'dark thirty as yours truly!
Everything was going smooth and on time, without issue, until an overhead bin had a broken latch, above First Class seats no less. After 45 minutes of attempted repair and deboarding a few people from the plane to facilitate, someone finally made a command decision and they brought out the duct tape. Thank God!
So, after a fully hour and change delay on the tarmac, our flight finally got off the ground and we made it to Oklahoma City without further issue. I ordered and Uber to take myself and two other coin show travelers (one who I do know pretty well) to the Hotel/Convention Center.
.
After a quick freshen up I quickly made my way over to the bourse, where I immediately met Paul @Pnies20 . He had just left David Kahn's table with a fistful of really nice CBH's, and a smile from ear-to-ear. But alas, the feeding frenzy was over. Dave had released the second part of the Penbrooke Collection an hour and or so earlier, and I missed it. I heard the table was three people deep.
Curse the broken latch!!
Thankfully, a dealer I am friends with snagged maybe half a dozen, and I think I got first shot on most of those the next morning. Which meant I had to pay up a little (a lot?), but I still ended up with three coins from that sale that I really appreciate.
.
But before we go there ...
As is our tradition at the Summer ANA World's Fair of Money, the BHNC had our "Corn Roast" dinner on Tuesday evening. I had a little on the line here as I had found and hired the catering service on a wing and a prayer. Thankfully, as expected (hoped?!), it worked out very well and we had a great turnout. If anyone ever needs an event catered in OKC, it's Doricia with B&B Catering. She was FANTASTIC to work with, and the food was downright delicious, plentiful and overall, quite reasonable.
After dinner there was a lot of show and tell about coins people had brought, as well as some buy, sell and trade activity, and, of course, the general fun, comradery and banter ... and maybe even some embellished storytelling … that such events can bring forth. I did buy a coin from my friend Steve Herrman, and sold three … one to our newest member of the Club, and two to my friend Brigette @mtn_scout
But one of the best things here was that my good friend Lance @lkeigwin was in attendance!
For those of you that don't know how far the miracles of modern medicine go, he had a double lung transplant last September.
Read that again, and take a moment to let that sink in.
While I know from all the stories he and I have shared from before, during and after his ordeal, this has been quite a tumultuous journey. But he is alive, in relatively good spirits, and is a walking, talking miracle.
Also, I had forgotten he said he had something for me. Lance gave me an honorary T shirt for the little bit of moral support I gave him this last year. I proudly wore the T shirt he gave me on Friday all day on the bourse, in full solidarity (I may share the image later). Love you Brother!
Ohhh ... and, as a preview of the show and the day ahead, right as dinner was server ... lightning struck and the skies opened up ...
.
Wednesday
I left breakfast at the hotel a bit early as I had agreed to meet with a friend I haven't met in person yet. One of the great things about going to shows is we have the ability to meet collectors from around the country and from every venue in life.
And so, in the lobby of the convention center, I had the enviable pleasure of meeting Mr. @MFeld , in the flesh even (!!!). This was before the show opened to the members or public, and I think we chatted for a good 45 minutes. We even carried that over into the show for a bit. He only stayed for a couple hours after that and had other people to see and find before heading home, but I really enjoyed talking with him.
I have known Mark through the boards, PM's, emails and/or his involvement with Heritage over the last 17 years or so, but we have never had the pleasure of meeting face-to-face. I think we hit it off very well and probably could have spent the whole morning chatting away, under different circumstances.
.
A bit after Mark and I said our "safe travels” in parting, it was time to find some newps, and I quickly found myself chatting with Phil at Eye Appealing Coins, discussing and looking at coins.
I picked a few from his new inventory, and he picked through my "for sale box" taking a half dozen. That deal put me cash positive and coin negative, and we were both happy. It was a good start, for sure.
I also talked with my friends at David Kahn's table, and was glad to see Dave was back in the saddle, so to speak. It's always a pleasure to see and talk with Melissa (she's just so friendly to me), and with Dick Graham and Josh too. If you count Dick's recent health issues, that table had two more walking, talking miracles. Life is precious. Cherish it.
Anyway, knowing I needed to get the 7 coins I had dropped off at PCGS for grading before my certificates expired at midnight (!!), I did that (very smooth, as always!), and then I did the very important task of lot viewing at Sheridan Downey's table.
Man, there were some WOW! coins available in that sale!! Unfortunately, some of those were only available due to a Club member who passed away suddenly last year. But there were some mighty coins and no lack of interest (if you look at the Prices Realized on Sheridan's website, you'll see).
.
By this time I was spent but before I went over to the Hotel to get ready to Bid the Downey auction and get ready for dinner, I stopped by Alan of @Desert Moon at his table. I had long wanted to at least say Hi and chat with him a little, as we have missed really connecting at the last couple shows and since he has been on the “other side of the table”. I also wanted to see him as soon as I could because I hoped he still had a coin I thought I might want.
Interesting story here. On Thursday I did a presentation on Die Cracks and Die Crack progression for the BHNC open meeting (more on that further on in the report). To close out my presentation, I did a fun segment on Todd's Top 10 Die Cracks for Capped Bust Half Dollars from a list of coins I had selected a few weeks ago.
One of the coins I had decided to highlight was a Very Late Die State 1813 O-107a ... a coin which I have never owned. I find this a fascinating Die State coin for the numerous obverse and reverse cracks and die fatigue it exhibits. For those of you who attended my presentation ... well you know! And thank you for coming too!
Anyway … low and behold, a few days before the show, a PCGS AU55 CAC example showed up on Desert Moon's website. I studied the online images, the previous sale, etc, and felt it might be a great fit for my group of girls.
The coin was still there, and we came to an agreement while chatting. He even bought a coin from me as we chatted a little more, and then I was off to make bids and enjoy dinner.
All of my bids (except one) got crushed. I only was bidding on a half a dozen, but I wasn't even the real underbidder on most by the time the dust settled. I did win one, but she didn't come home with me. She did pay for my trip however, but I didn't know that yet, and it hadn't happened yet either, so that is really a story for a different day.
Dinner with friends on Wednesday was very nice, and quite a lot quieter than the 40 or so we had for Tuesday's event.
Dave @drddm , Paul @Pnies20 , David @DavidK , Chase @jcrispies , Phil @habaraca and his lovely wife Barb all were in attendance, and we had a lovely meal.
.
I know a lot of people who come in and do a show in one or two days, and while I don't like to do it that way, I guess I can see how it can happen, as a great majority of the show was packed into the point from when I got to the show at about 3:30p on Tuesday until about 29 hours later, as I found myself enjoying the last of my glass of wine after a steak dinner. It had been a whirlwind trip so far, with just non-stop activity, discussions, viewings and wheeling and dealing ... but a fantastic time with great people and some good coins.
.
I'll try to offer more thoughts and stories from the next few days (I stayed through Saturday at 11am) ... but here are the four new coins from Wednesday. I'll look through the rest of my ramblings from my flight home and try to summarize Thursday, Friday and Saturday in a seperate post to this thread sometime later today or early this week.
.
sorry for the blurry, poorly exposed free-hand image ... I'll highlight these coins with better images soon, probably in the Saturday Coffee and Coins thread
.
more to come ...

It was nice catching up with you, Todd.
Thanks for a great report, Todd!
How many additional parts to your report do you anticipate adding and when? I’m asking because I have a another trip coming up late next month and am hoping I’ll be able to finish reading your entire report (including detailed stories and new purchases) before I leave.😀
And it was, of course, great to meet and visit with you after all this time.

Here are some action shots from Thursday..
BHNC #248 … 130 and counting.
Excellent report Todd! It was almost as if I was there while I was reading this!
Great report, thanks!

Great report! Sounds like it was a whirlwind blast and you scored some really beautiful halves. Thanks for sharing.
Todd,
Nice seeing you and exchanging some cool bust halves. Always fun and thanks for the report.
Best, DM
Always a pleasure hanging with you Todd, had a blast! Love ya brother

Nice report, thank you. Next best thing to being there.
@pursuitofliberty - I need for you to start collecting Capped Bust dimes............
Nice report and totally love the busties, it does the soul good 👍
You acquired some really nice original Capped Bust half dollars! Congratulations!

Great report Todd. I appreciate the efforts. As a date collector of CBH's I can only dream of owning mitts full of those pieces of history.

Thank you all for the comments! You are all pretty awesome!
And @Cameonut , just remember, it really is just one coin at a time. Even collecting by date can cause you to fall in love with one enough to take an extra ... and, well ... before you know it!!
Mark @MFeld, you’ll probably make it through my whole 3-part ramble by the time you go on your next trip. Maybe!

Okay, quick bi***.
Unfortunately, the air quality in our hotel was atrocious. Based on what I have done for … umm … 35 years … I almost tried to get senior management involved and told them HOW to fix it. But alas … I think I would have been speaking Greek to mice … and a real evaluation inspection would be at least a whole day worth.
I probably should have said something more though as the smell was that of a not-very-good cigar smoke from last week. However since all of the staff knew, and fielded multiple complaints with ready excuses, it’s obviously an upper management problem, and I highly doubt a real command decision-maker was within 300 miles of the site.
I mention this because I didn’t sleep well all week (and because it bugged me), and Wednesday night was no exception.
I also missed some sleep because I DID win one coin in Sheridan’s auction, but it was not a coin I especially loved ... AND, it wasn’t cheap. As you can imagine, waking up thinking about that wasn’t pleasant.
More about that later, because Thursday was a big day and I hit the morning at full stride, again.
.
Thursday
First up, we had our Board Meeting for the BHNC at 8:00am. This was fairly uneventful, but is always worthwhile just to get together and chat a bit, and make sure everything is in order.
It was nice too because Lance and I sat close, and we got to talking at the end of the meeting and after, and then we walked and talked on the way down to Heritage so he could get his Legacy Customer voucher.
I’m not a big enough fish for that card I guess.
Hey, wait … Mark!?!
.
Off to the floor together, Lance and I just kept up our chat until we got down to Sheridan’s table, and then we got it all set up before Sheridan and Kathleen arrived. This was really nice as since I moved to Washington, it’s not like I can schedule a job site visit to Monterey and then swing by for a Lance get-together (which is something I did do several times back when I was in Fresno).
After Sheridan and Katheleen arrived and people started picking up coins and the “business” started, I tagged along with @habaraca and @Pnies20 to see the Halumin light box (I commented in another more comprehensive thread about this device).
Then Paul dragged me over to meet Ken Byrd. I almost bought that coin … I even went and looked again on Saturday … but alas, in the end, I passed.
Anyway, I wanted to go back and look at Kahn’s table and make sure nothing was tugging at me. There was one (which I bought after my presentation) but it wasn’t a Pembrooke coin, and I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss anything else there as they were still pretty fresh. Plus, I enjoy the people at Dave’s table, and I wanted to invite Melissa to my presentation.
.
Several more stops, conversations, and phone charging issues later and it was 2:00pm in Room 105, the BHNC Open Meeting. I presented on Die Cracks and Die Progression. Thanks to Sean @bikergeek for his help setting up and using his computer and peripherials.
In retrospect, I should have done my presentation on PowerPoint differently … it’s been a LONG time since I wrote one … but thankfully, I realized my error fairly quickly and adjusted.
I’m not sure how some parts went off, or how well my humor was received, but I always feel good when everyone stays and no one falls asleep, especially when we turn off the overhead lighting!
.
After the presentation a new challenge presented itself. My friend Matt @scubafuel and I had organized a small dinner party at Teller’s, an amazing old bank building in downtown, but the guest list was quickly multiplying. As we attempted to add to our party, we were hit with a sobering realization. The restaurant would not allow for a single party to have more than one ticket, and no one really wanted to take on that challenge.
Dave @drddm and I had a back and forth conversation with the staff, but Matt (who had made the original reservation) had run off. His schedule was really short, so I finally convinced them we were good to go and if nothing else I would make sure we’d cover.
It’s really too bad that in the end we ended up with so many people over multiple tables, and not a more banquet style setting that allowed more cross talk, but alas, I think good times were had by all.
Before dinner though I made sure to let Melissa know how much she hurt my feelings.
j/k They got busy and she missed the event.
But then I purchased the coin I had been thinking about since Wednesday morning, a gorgeous, grey dirt, caky 1836 O-115 that was part of the Jules Reiver collection.
.
Again, I think almost everyone enjoyed dinner. The architecture was stunning … almost cathedral like, maybe even worthy of a Wiener medal … hmmmmm
Anyway, back at the hotel, everyone seemed to be heading to bed early, but David @Davidk7 and I snuck out and walked down to the Omni to see what that was like.
The bar was lively, and we ran into a couple of people from my dinner party, including @EastonCollection and a dealer I know and have done a little business with (and spoken with at shows). He bought me a good bourbon on the rocks … which was a nice surprise. Thanks Allen!
The bar was loud and so we ended up over by the fireplace, where we found Matt again too!
Anyone who really knows me knows that hearing speech well, especially in certain settings, is a struggle for me. After 44 years of making machines and jet aircraft work, no matter how good the hearing aides are it’s still a challenge. But the fireplace area was much better and we chatted for a bit before calling it a night.
Back at my presentation I had opened with “Hi, my name is Todd … and I’m a crack addict.”
Maybe I should amend that, because quite often I feel like a DEAF crack addict!
.
Friday
Friday morning I felt okay, even though I didn’t sleep well, again. But alas, there was a show going on!
After breakfast and suitable doses of caffeine, and I had enough energy to start my day …
Some of you might know I also collect a little currency here and there, and so after two and a half days of all coins, I dedicated Friday hitting some Currency Dealers and seeing what I could see.
In my searches I made a new contact, a young sharp with Dempsey & Baxter. He offered me a decent $20. for my "better signature" District set of FRN Blue Seals at a favorable price, and then he made me a fair offer on a Green Eagle I had made as a PMG64, so we came up close to even. After a lengthy talk, I could tell he had a good eye and so I showed him the notes I was dropping off to PMG. I hope his expectations hold, especially on the $50.
Lance was leaving so it was back to Sheridan's table to catch up one more time before he headed to the airport.
After that it was back over and dropping my notes off to PMG.
.
Next, I needed to get upstairs and view Steve Thompson’s Quarter Collection at Stack’s (and look through some of their other Bust and Currency auction material), so up to the lot viewing I went. I ran into @mtn_scout again, and she sat next to me, occasionally passing a coin over for me to see.
All of that done, I was back down on the floor, as I heard a dealer I knew was leaving and I wanted to say goodbye and ask him a question.
Remember I told you I had won a coin I really didn’t want in Sheridan’s auction?
Well, this dealer had expressed an interest and so I asked him to make me an offer. He did, and although I should have just accepted, I gave him a worthwhile break from that and sent it home with him. I was whole with a profit. My trip was mostly paid for, and I hope that he’ll return the favor someday.
.
Breathe.
I think at this point I lost all sense of space and time. I was starting to feel exhausted.
.
As I tried to gather my bearing I ended up at Steve Tompkin’s table, and we talked for a while. I like him, and we had an easy conversation. Then he showed me a coin he bought at the show, which turned out to be another secondhand purchase (like my three from EAC that had been at DK’s table). Except this was one I SOLD to EAC! Anyway, we got a good chuckle out of that.
As I left his table I saw another coin and immediately thought of Brigette, going so far as to text her with the price and where.
.
I said I lost all sense of space and time, right?
Abby @pcgs_education , I apologize. I fully expected I would participate in the Grading Contest (and enjoy it), and I appreciate everything you did to get me a slot … only to absolutely forget to show up.
How embarrassing. I hope someone was able to fill my slot, and I hope you won’t hold it against me.
Really. What a bonehead move.
,
Anyway I realized this last part when I ran into Brigette and she asked me how I did with the Contest.
Welp!
Anyway, we found the coin I texted her about, I attributed it for her (hopefully correctly), and so she agreed to buy a strictly original AU50 CBH that really was a pretty dang good deal.
Then, she sent the guy too little money with a pay app, as she was out of cash.
I covered (is this a theme?)
So for a brief moment (or a couple hours), I was the 4/19th owner of a coin SHE bought!
.
Then she dragged me over for a quick look at one more she wanted ME to see, and since we were in the area, I introduced her to Steve (they hadn’t met yet).
By this time though, I just knew I needed to lay down before dinner.
.
Back at the hotel I washed my face, cranked up the AC and laid down for a nap.
And missed my dinner plans!
By a ways!!
.
Images of the whole haul through Friday afternoon, as well as some architectural shots from inside of Teller’s on Thursday below.
I’ll finish up part 3 tomorrow as it’s even more fragmented on my tablet, and needs more editing than normal.
Stay tuned. I have a neat tie-in for you all on something I said here, and some summary thoughts.
Just as an FYI ... most of this was written on my flight home since I ended up in an aisle seat with no way to sleep. I have edited for clarity on some, and hopefully haven't missed too much.

Todd - BHNC #242
Took a nap and then woke up to some texts. There wasn't much left so since I am drinking a cup of tea, here we go ...
.
But before I forget; A year and a half ago I headed up a project for the BHNC to have our 55th Anniversary Medal struck, which I commissioned Daniel Carr @dcarr do for us. I had never met Dan, and I was glad I got to at least say Hi to him in person on Friday. I caught him going over a submission for some material to CACG (or maybe CAC) at a different table (I kept missing him at his), but I had a chance to thank him for his outstanding craftsmanship in person, and I was glad to be able to do that.
Also, Wednesday or Thursday I had seen and had a short conversation with a couple of folks at the Oklahoma Coin Club. They really did a nice job organizing the show (I thought), and the venue was pleasant, clean, well-lit and comfortable. I saw them both again Saturday morning right before I went from lot viewing to the floor, and I thanked them both again. Other than my complaint with my hotel’s air quality, the city of OKC seemed very hospitable and I enjoyed my stay quite a bit. The whole event was very well managed from what I could see, and I think they made their city and the ANA proud.
Every dealer I talked to had somewhere between a good and a great show, with one bigger West Coast dealer who helped sponsor the show (West Coast Coins) commenting it was his best show EVER. I would say on balance it exceeded many expectations, and it sounded like there was no absence of buyers looking for good coins and willing to pay, and plenty of sellers with good material to offer.
.
I also forgot to mention the outstanding job that Early Cents did, at least with their lot viewing. They had a great group of Capped Bust Halves from an old time collection, freshly graded by our host and ready for new homes. I know some Nuts prevailed in bidding, both live and on-line, and I heard nothing but positive comments.
Lot viewing was very professional and unpressured, and when I bid, it was an easy on-line interface.
Unfortunately, like Sheridan’s auction, I was destroyed in the bidding (although I only bid on a few) so I came away with nothing there.
I also did not attend the auction live, and I think that would have been fun. Although I wouldn’t have missed dinner at Teller’s, I would have liked to do that too. I haven’t been to a live auction in DECADES!
.
Saturday
I woke up early after broken sleep and decided I'd grab breakfast and head over to do lot viewing at Heritage. There were several coins (both US and World) that I wanted to put my eyes on.
From there it was down to floor that was clearing out fast. Although I find this unfortunate for the general public and locals, let's face it, the show is a long haul of a week for the dealers and so I really can't blame them. And with some much business conducted by Friday, I suspect it's just a good business (and family) decision for many.
.
I looked at a couple things (currency and coins) I had for a second look but ended up passing on them as they just didn’t speak to me.
Having a little time left, I made my way back to the ANA exhibits ... something I often miss with all the other things going on.
There were some really nice and informative ones, but WOW, in my mind, there were two really great displays that grabbed my full attention.
If anyone knows who prepared the Jacques Wiener Medal display, say THANK YOU! for me.
What a pleasure to see so many together, and be able to appreciate the depth of the medals and the precision artistry of the die engraving that must have created them in person. Quite ironic too, as on Thursday night I was imagining the depth of carving required for those kinds of medals as I looked across the floor at Teller's.
And apropos as well, as these are items I was long ago introduced to via images and explanations here, on this forum, by someone willing to share. I have only seen them in images on-line, save for two in person some years ago … and then here I was, in an empty back corner on Saturday morning at the ANA looking at maybe 8 cases full of 6 medals each (and both sides to boot!). I mean, this was just a fantastic display, and I voted it my #1.
Also, I have to say the care and in-depth information of the presenter’s journey with the Seated Liberty Coins and their 10-case (?) display was an absolutely exhibit as well. It offered a wonderful primer for collectors of all Seated Material, including the Gobrecht Dollars, with a lovely example of each. Just a wonderful exhibit that would have grabbed my number #1 vote on any other day.
.
It was also nice to meander around the back and talk to some of the mint presenters, including a friendly gal who was manning the Sunshine Mint both. Her name slipped my mind, but it was a nice quick chat.
Finally I caught Chase @jacrispies as I was walking out, and I told him about the Wiener Medals in the back. Yes, the exhibit was that good.
And that concluded my time in the Convention Center.
.
Back at the hotel I caught up with three fellow Nuts and we grabbed an Uber to the Airport.
I had to wait for my baggage to be taken for 15 minutes or so (I checked one bag), but afterwards we all made quick work of the airport security and since we were all in the same area for departure (3 gates at the end), and because we were all plenty early and hungry, we enjoyed lunch, conversation and a drink at a bar/sandwich place. I had a chicken sandwich and a beer, and it was quite tasty.
These guys aren’t members here so far as I know, although I did mention one of them in my long ramblings here. They are however three fine gentlemen, and people I am proud to know. Two are published authors, and any one of them I would gladly have a meal, a coffee or a drink with anytime. In fact I have with at least one of them on at least a few occasions.
.
My flight was uneventful, and like I said I wrote a lot of this whole odyssey on my tablet while flying back to SeaTac before I grabbed my bag, jumped in my car and made the two and a half hour drive back to the edge of the Earth, here on the wild Washington Coast.
The air quality is so much nicer here too. Indoors and out!
.
Here’s a few images of that Wiener Medal display ... wish I would have taken ones of every case.
Thanks for reading along! That's all for this year!!
.

Todd - BHNC #242
Your write up does a good job of recounting everything Todd although I was wondering when you'd mention the Early Cents auction. That was a big part of my table's experience at Tellers as @Pnies20, @drddm, @jacrispies, myself, and others were watching live and having quite the discussion about prices realized. I, like Todd, got smoked in the auction but someone at my dinner table at Tellers did walk away winning a lot.
Like Todd all the dealers I asked had a really great show. There was some moaning about connecting flights but dealers seemed very happy with the turnout. I heard from one of the ANA volunteers that there was a HUGE number of people who became ANA members at the show so considering everything I wouldn't be surprised if there is another show in OKC.
@pursuitofliberty I am glad to hear you had such a great time at the show! I am also known to get so caught up in conversations with fellow numismatists that I forget other appointments I have scheduled, so I won't hold it against you... at least not this time

You got one of my favorite coins at the show! I just didn’t happen to need it. I’m glad you listened to me after pestering you to get it! 🤣
BHNC #248 … 130 and counting.
I was glad you told me about it and the collection Kahn had in general. I really like the two other coins I got from that collection as well.
@pursuitofliberty - great write up. Now, I got to get to to start collecting Capped Bust dimes!
