Two clocks on ebay?

alaura22alaura22 Posts: 3,576 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was bidding on a coin on ebay, when I clicked on the bid now I watched the clock run down and at 3 seconds left I placed my bid. My bid was placed only to find out that there was another 10 seconds left in the auction before it closed. What's up with that? I ended up losing the auction. Bidders beware, just another game that they play to stop snipping.

    that's not even a good conspiracy theory

    not sure how your browser got out of sync but it did

    in the future, refresh with 1 minute to go and with the confidence it will reload by 20 secs left

    I use a sniping program when bidding on eBay auctions, and it has never failed me. This eliminates the risk of electrical or other computer connectivity issues in my house, but more importantly, I don’t have to be paying attention. I can be dining out, at a Symphony or movie, or dealing with “digestive” issues, lol. The program allows me to plug in well in advance exactly how many seconds before the end I want my bid to be made. Personally, I go with 10 seconds, but as noted, you can select less time remaining.

    I’m pretty sure you have some kind of caching issue with your browser.

    So do I using auctionstealer. Last week I got notification that my snipe had won. I went to pay and there were 3 bidders with higher bids and I did not win. I contacted auctionstealer to see what is up with that.

    They got back to me and said eBay has multiple servers. Occasionally their time clocks are out of sync. The first time it has happened to me with hundreds of snipe bids placed over the years.

    The winner bid more than my max bid so did not really matter to me, just curious.

    Even the original poster had someone place a higher bid. Bidding last is not how you win, you need the highest bid, or a bid at least the minimum next bid if the current high bid is very close to your max.

    @davewesen
    Thank you for that info
    Yes someone bid higher than me but the whole idea of snipping is not to give them the time to out bid you.
    If the clocks are not in sync that would explain it

    Is it possible that competitor was going to place his max bid at that time anyway, without even knowing your max bid? If so, then the timing of your bid doesn’t really matter if your max bid was less than his max bid. If you disagree, please show us the eBay timing and amount of your bid and his bid. No need to identify the actual coin or denomination. Thanks.

    Won't help if the problem is the ebay servers...

    The bid history on that item might have bids that look odd for the last minute with a smaller bid later than a higher one. Luckily it does not happen often and I would rather have a clock mismatch occasionally than the entire eBay website crash.

    FWIW, I’ve found that my computer and my cell phone are 2-3 seconds apart from each other on eBay auctions — the computer is more accurate.
