I have long been partial to the large straight date. I think it stems from the 1877 Indian Cent, which I desperately wanted when I was in high school. The 1874 to ‘79 cents had the same style date. The 1879 was good because it had the same date style and was cheap.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I like the Medium curved date overall. I like them all, but think this one fits the design visually. The 72 woodgrain really grabs me. I had a collection once of all woodgrain lacking only 5. Stuff happened and it went away. Very interesting post.

I was going to vote for the third date style until I read the options and noticed how the earliest style curved the same way as the lettering. I feel like that one is more visually appealing. Neat thread, by the way. Polls are underrated.

Tough call! I went for the original, initial logo because of the history and issues striking copper-nickel blanks. More die cracks, still some good repunched dates, etc. I do think each option has its merits and place in history.

Interesting poll. Quite the contrast.
Not where I thought this was going.
After seeing the 1861, my mind was made up….until I saw the poll options. 😁
Longacre's original design is the best.
All the different fonts and varieties kind of what make me love this series so much!

Always preferred the overdates or MPD's.

These are the years for the types above:
1859-1871 - Medium curved
1872-1873 - Small straight
1874-1882 - Large straight
1881-1882 is sort of transitional - not exactly straight.
1883-1890 - Large curved
1891-1905 - Huge date
1906-1909 - Reverted back to the medium curved date.
