Jefferson Nickel - not what its cracked up to be

oih82w8oih82w8 Posts: 12,548 ✭✭✭✭✭

I found this 1941 Jefferson in the register till and thought that was a mixture anomaly and put it away until I could take a better look at it. Turns out to be a cracked planchet.

Neat looking battle scars. It is oddly appealing, but I am partial to Jefferson Nickels.

I had a 'split' Jefferson from the 40's some years ago. I had it certified, with a half in each slab. I'm not sure I remember exactly, but I think I stuck it on ebay at 150 or so. It languished for a few years before I sold it for around 80 bucks. This was 20 some years ago, but I think they're more desirable now.......

Like the coin ... cool planchet lamination / cracked planchet ... AND I got a good laugh since I read the title first! :D

While not a collector of such, I like it as a representative of the minting process and thonk we all should have one of various types of mint process goofs. Nice piece of history.

Next question: why do you call it a cracked planchet instead of a lamination? 🤔

    The reason I was asking..

If it was a cracked planchet, shouldn't the 'cracks' also show on the portion outside the rim?

Could it possibly more likely be an impure alloy mixture instead? I'm thinking laminations, impure mixture, etc. due to the multiple lines all aligned in the same direction; also note the different color within the lines. Also, I question whether a cracked planchet would have multiple cracks at the same time?

Whichever it is... a neat looking coin.

    Yep.

Not only that a cracked planchet must show the same cracks on the obverse and reverse, through the whole thickness of the coin.

The OP's coin is classified as a laminated planchet.
