18 Years as a Buffalo Herder

It has been a long and rewarding journey to assemble a complete set of PCGS graded Buffalos.

Here is the link to the registry set: The Black Diamond Collection

While the set is complete, with upgrades, it is never truly completed.

Upgrades will likely be few and infrequent so now it is time to focus on other sets in progress.

  1. Dansco 7070
  2. Dansco Buffalo Nickels

The target grade for these sets is around XF45 but I will need to compromise for the pricier coins.

I love Buffalos so feel free to post a picture of your favorite Buffalo.

Below is one of my favorite members of the herd that is not in the registry set. Maybe a future crossover.

1924-D, NGC MS64*

Well done. That’s one beautiful collection. I’ve toyed with collecting Buffs myself. Maybe one of these days I will. I’ve always loved the design…classic Americana.

Very nice set, congrats on the completion. I love the design but only have a few for type or other sets, tough to have a favorite with only having so few but this is one I like very much.

Wow. What a challenging set to complete. Some of those teens to mid ‘20’s mintmarks are so tough to find in the higher grades. Congrats! A couple of the last proofs.

One of my favorite buffalos. Sorry, couldn't resist! :)

My 1918/7-D is very similar to yours, though raw.
I'll probably never get the 1916 DDO, though it's a spectacular variety.

Congrats from a 65 year collector of these regal beauties. I know the feeling of completing this collection, but yours is quite above reproach. I never had the opportunity to own the error coins and I congratulate you for doing so. Thanks for sharing.
Some beautiful forum coins. Love them all with @crazyhounddog being a fav, as is @ad4400

Too many Buffalos to pick one favorite but I always enjoy showing these. All PGCS-65s, all doubled dies, all different, all unattributed, all cherrypicks.

You all have posted some really nice Buffalos. I think I need to find a couple of proofs to add to the herd.

I love your set! You have all of those sharp horns on the better date s mints! The 1818/7-d and 1916/16 are really cool as well. Plus many lovely mint state coins like the 1913-s Type II and 1924-d

This is my best Buffalo. Its part of a better date 20th century type set.

@ad4400: thanks for your post! I wondered what happened to it? At this year’s FUN, the dealer who sold it to me & I were reminiscing about it. Congratulations - it remains one of the more beautiful coins I’ve ever owned!

I found this one in my “sold” archives. I wish I still had it:

Ken, that 3 legged buffalo is super clean for a 55. Just a little rub which is evident on the buffalo’s shoulder. No distracting marks or blemishes either except for the non distracting dot on the reverse between the T and S in CENTS. Nice orange peel effect on the skin. I could see it in a 58 CAC holder. The light strike may have held it back. Really nice. Zack

Never understand why people even try to take a photo with a buffalo. Now the animal has to be euthanized.

That might happen in a zoo, but I don't think they do that to an adult bison in Yellowstone.
There was a bison calf in Yellowstone that was euthanized when a tourist handled it and it was rejected by the herd.

I agree with your general point, though - the human interaction can be bad for the animal,
even though the animal dominated the initial encounter.
There have been incidents in Alaska where a bear mauled or killed a person and it was subsequently killed.
